Suburban Chicago Area, Illinois

OBITUARY - THELMA (STAFFORD) McPHERSON

Thelma STAFFORD McPHERSON a resident of Wheaton [Illinois]. A visitation for Thelma STAFFORD McPHERSON, 85, will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 6, at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at Community Fellowship Church, 28W240 North Ave., West Chicago, IL 60185. Interment will be in Wheaton Cemetery.

Born Dec. 30, 1923, on a farm at Gravity, Iowa, to Harry and Bertha Stafford, she died Friday, July 3, 2009, at home.

Thelma and Alex met on a blind date while she was teaching in Tarkio, Mo. They were married a year later, and had been married 58 years. After having taught home economics in Iowa and Missouri, and moving from Kansas City to the Wheaton area, she enjoyed substituting in District 200. She led a life full of service to others as exemplified by being a co-founder of Literacy Volunteers of DuPage and the first president of Literacy Volunteers of Illinois and was honored by First Lady Barbara BUSH for her literacy service on a national level. She was an active member of Community Fellowship Church and leaves many friends there. A favorite saying is a quote from Henry DRUMMOND who wrote, "You will find as you look back upon your life, that the moments, when you have truly lived, are the moments when you have done things in the spirit of love."

She leaves her husband, Alexander McPHERSON; two sons, Harry (Barbara) McPHERSON of Wheaton and Brian (Kathy) McPHERSON of Burlington Junction, Mo.; two grandchildren, Timothy (Andrea) McPHERSON of Glenwood, Iowa and Angela (Michael) LIGHTNER of Burlington Junction; and three great-grandsons, Aaron and Brayden McPHERSON and Andrew LIGHTNER. She has one sister, Lorene (Merritt) TRIGGS of Mount Ayr, Iowa; one half brother, Verne (Jennie) KING of Clarinda, Iowa; and one sister-in-law, Jane GRAY (Tyson) CARPENTER of St. Joseph, Mo. She has many nieces nephews and an extended family, The PARKS, the HAS and the KIMS, of whom she was very fond.

For those of you wishing to honor Thelma, a memorial to Community Fellowship Church or to Literacy Volunteers of DuPage County, would be greatly appreciated. Information and the guest book are available at www.hultgrenfh.com or call Hultgren Funeral Home in Wheaton at 630-668-0027.
