OBITUARY - ALTA MARIE (BENNETT) McGILVREY

Alta Marie (BENNETT) McGILVREY was born November 14, 1914, in Hocking, Monroe County, Iowa. She was the daughter of William Emmett and Anna Margareet (MANLEY) BENNETT. She lived in Albia through childhood and adolescence, graduated from normal training of Albia High School and taught in Guilford Township, Monroe County.

On May 26, 1935, she was united in marriage to John Albert McGILVREY. Most of their married life was spent in Mount Ayr where she worked for a short time in the Mount Ayr public schools and was currently serving as a librarian in the Mount Ayr Public Library, a position she had held since the early 1970's.

The McGILVREY'S had three children -- Mrs. Robert (Joanne) BLUCNK of Windfall, Indiana; John B. McGILVREY of Woodward, Iowa; and Janene McGILVREY of Creston, Iowa; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Other survivors include one sister, Hazel (BENNETT) TENNANT of Hartford, Michigan; a son-in-law, Robert BLUNCK; a daughter-in-law, Maxine (JONES) McGILVREY; numerous relatives and a host of friends.

Marie was an active member of many organizations, including her service as secretary of Eastern Star for 31 years; O.E.S. Past Matrons; Swirls Regional Advisory Council; Women's Federated Club (Evening Literature); Modern Mother's Club; and Mothers Achievement Club. She also participated in Republican Women's Club, Ringgold County ALLAY COuncil, United Methodist Women (afternoon circle) as well as serving her church in many ways.

Marie was dedicated to her work and it was a source of pleasure and strength. She was devoted to her family, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren provided her a great source of pride and she was a participant in all of their accomplishments.

Funeral services were held December 17, 1987, from the United Methodist Church in Mount Ayr, Iowa, conducted by Rev. Sam FRY. Music was provided by Mike GREENE and Ron ROBINSON.

Casketbearers were Glenn WINN, Ed SHIELDS, Randy McDONNELL, Jay MONDAY, Max ANDERSON and Harold GOLLIDAY. Honorary pallbearers were Steven DAVIS, Ronald BLUNCK, Robert BLUNCK, Richard BLUNCK and John C. McGILVREY.

A Memorial Service was conducted by Mount Ayr Chapter #356, Order of the Eastern Star.

Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery at Mount Ayr, Iowa.
