OBITUARY - JOHN H. McFARLAND

American Flag.jpg John H. McFARLAND, 96, passed away January 25 [2009] at the Mount Ayr Clearview Nursing Home.

John was born August 5, 1912 and was the only son of John and Clara McFARLAND. On August 16, 1941 he married Marjorie FISHER. They lived most of their lives in Ringgold County, with the exception being the five years John taught and coached in Redfield and those spent in the Navy during WW II.

In addition to his Navel service, teaching and coaching careers John was a partner in the Mount Ayr Implement business with his father-in-law, Keith FISHER, and brother-in-law, Bob FISHER. John retired in 1981 when the business was sold.

Sports played a major role in John's life and included outstanding careers in high school and college football and basketball. He loved "his" Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes and a competitive game of golf with his friends. John could also be found watching his favorite teams on the TV. He was blessed to be able to play golf well into his 90's.

John was extremely proud of his family and their achievements. He was able to see his two children and three grandchildren grow up and cherished the addition of each new great grandchild. Starting with Nathan LANE, 21 in February, down to Evan STUCK, the newest, born December 1, 2008. In addition to the oldest and youngest his great-grandchildren are Matthew LANE, 16, Ashton LANE, 13, Michael John LANE, 10 and Maggie STUCK, 3. Each was precious in his sight.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie, daughter Melanie (Dr. Marvin ) LANE of Lamar, CO., son John K. (Kathy) McFARLAND of Mount Ayr , three grandchildren, Shayne (Marilyn) LANE of Lafayette, CO., Scott (Kim) LANE of Leawood, KS, Megan (Jim) STUCK of Warrensburg, MO., as well the above mentioned six great-grandchildren and a nephew, Louis WILSON of Arvada, CO.

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Clara McFARLAND and one sister, Maxine VANDERFLUTE.

Memorial funds will be given to hospice.

Services Thursday, January 29, 2009 at 11:00 a.m., Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home, Mount Ayr, Iowa
