OBITUARY - MAYE ELLEN (BENDER) MATTHEWS

Maye Ellen BENDER, daughter of Perry Martin BENDER and Grace Van WINKLE BENDER, was born June 7, 1898, near Maloy, Iowa, and departed this life October 21, 1980, at the age of 82 years, four months and 14 days.

On June 14, 1916, she was united in marriage to Robert Lloyd MATTHEWS, also of Maloy. To this union were born three children, Kenneth E. MATTHEWS of Clearfield, Carrol P. MATTHEWS of Diagonal, and Roberta Maye COOK of Clearfield.

At an early age she joined the Highland Church, Grant township, Ringgold county, Iowa, later transferring her membership to the United Presbyterian Church at Clearfield, Iowa. When the Presbyterian Church disbanded she transferred her membership to the United Methodist Church, where she attended when able and continued interest in the church and its activities.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Kenneth and his wife, Mildred, Carrol and his wife Juanita, and Roberta Maye COOK; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two sisters-in-law, Margaret JEANES MATTHEWS of Huxley, Iowa, and Lora MATTHEWS NEWBURN of Clearfield, and a number of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Preceding her in death were her devoted husband Robert; her father, mother, her sister, Reva BENDER MOREY, and son-in-law, George D. COOK.

Maye was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and especially enjoyed her many clubs of which she was a member. Her children and grandchildren were her pride and joy. She was a generous and loving mother, always thinking of her family and others. She was called "Grandma" by many others.

Life is Forever!
Death is a Dream!

There is no night without a dawning,
No Winter without a Spring,
And beyond death's dark horizon
Our hearts once more will sing -
For those who leave us for a while
Have only Gone Away
Out of a restless, careworn world
Into a "Brighter Day"
Where there will be no partings
And time is not counted by years,
Where there are no trials or troubles,
No worries, no cares and no tears.
~ Helen Steiner Rice.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 21, at the Clearfield United Methodist Church with Pastor Kevin HOFFMAN oficiating. Musica was provided by Michelle HOFFMAN accompanied at the organ by Nancy BROWN. Casketbearers were LeRoy BEGGS, Dwight MATHENY, Havery HEIMKE, Bill LIVINGSTON, Ronald BROWN and John DUEY.
