OBITUARY - CLIFFORD WILLIAM MATTHEWS

Clifford William MATTHEWS was born at Hill Rose, Colorado on July 6,1908, the son of J. Fletcher and Beulah Rose MATTHEWS.

On October 2, 1927, he was married to Viola BURCH of Delphos at the First Christian Church in Mount Ayr. To them were born a daughter and a son: Betty RAFFEL of Tucson, Arizona, and Marion MATTHEWS of Murray, Iowa. For ten years they lived in the Mount Ayr-Diagonal area, then moved to Sharpsburg-Lenox vicinity where they lived for six years before moving to Thayer and then to Winterset area where they made their home since.

Clifford had been in poor health for the past seven years or more. On Tuesday morning, June 27, he was brought to the Ringgold County Hospital where he died about 10 o'clock that evening.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Raymond, who died at an early age.

He is survived by his wife, Viola; daughter, Betty and son, Marion; grandson, Eddie RAFFEL of Yucaipa, California; grandson Randy MATTHEWS of Macksburg, Iowa; and great-granddaughter, Michelle RAFFEL. Also surviving him are five sisters and two brothers. They are: Goldie STEPHENS of Ames, Iowa; Mary THOMAS of Mount Ayr, Iowa; Ann SHELDON of El Segundo, California; Edna SICKELS of Mount Ayr; Trueman MATTHEWS of Fort Madison, Iowa; Bob MATTHEWS of Corvallis, Oregon; and, Neva FISHER of Mount Ayr; and several nephews and nieces.

Funeral services were held July 2, 1989, from the Wilson-Watson Funeral Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa, conducted by Rev. Ralph JOHNSON and Rev. Phil KINTON. Music was provided by Mike GREENE and Mrs. Dan CUNNING.

Casketbearers were Dan MEASE, Jack LYON, Rex CAMERON, Wayne GEORGE, Dwain PEPPMEIER and Raymond PEPPMEIER. Burial was in the Murray Cemetery at Murray, Iowa.
