OBITUARY - GERTIE BEATRICE (HATHAWAY) MARLER
Gertie Beatrice HATHAWAY was born at Tingley, Iowa, July 20, 1889, the daughter of Albert F.and Mary Elizabeth Hester HATHAWAY.
She spent her childhood years on the farm and attended Hackberry school. She was married at Tingley, Iowa, on March 17, 1909
to Joseph A. MARLER, who preceded her in death on January 24, 1942. To this union were born seven children, one infant
daughter, Eva Marie, preceded her in death.
They lived their first years of marriage in Cosby, Missouri and Diagonal,
Iowa, then moved to a farm near Tingley, Iowa. In 1944, Gertie and Lorene moved to Afton where they resided until moving to
Creston in 1957. Their home was at 606 West Mills until Gertie was taken to Crest Haven Nursing home in September, and
departed her life there on March 6, 1978 at the age of 88 years, 7 months and 14 days.
Mrs. MARLER is survived by
four daughters, Mrs. Roy (Beulah) PERKINS of Shannon City, Iowa, Lorene MARLER of Creston, Iowa, Mrs. M. W. (Vira) WILSON
of Red Oak, Iowa, and Mrs. Thelma WHITSON of Tingley, Iowa; two sons, W. V. "Bill" MARLER of Armstrong, Iowa, and
Vern MARLER of Creston; 17 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death
by her parents, seven sisters, five brothers, two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was a loving wife and
mother, always ready and willing to be of service to her many friends and her passing leaves a vacancy in the community that
only time can heal.We cannot and we will not say;
She is dead; but just away
To an unknown land.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. March10, 1978 at the First United Methodist Church in Creston. Rev. K. Wayne
HOEHNS officiated. Music was by Mrs. Jean BOYD, organist, and Mrs. Ruth ENGLAND, a long-time friend and neighbor, sang "In
The Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross."
Casket bearers were Robert MARLER, Harris PERKINS, Henry PEDERSEN, Robert
WILSON, Carl PERKINS and Ronald WILSON. Honorary pallbearers were Fred ALLEY, Orville BUTTREY, Terry COX, Dale HAIGHT,
Michael HUGHES, Harvey McINTOSH, Larry MILLER, Cecil STEVENSON, Dean STEWART, James WILSON and John WILSON. All were
grandsons and grandsons-in-law of Mrs. MARLER.
Relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs.
Donald HATHAWAY, Ames, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher HATHAWAY, Grand Meadow, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Porter WEDDLE & Retha,
Albany, Miss.; Mrs. Lee SCHMITT, Mitchelville, Iowa; Jerry MARLER, Mt. Ayr, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Gerald WILEY, Mount
Burial was in the Tingley Cemetery.
