OBITUARY - CHARLES NICHOLAS "CHARLIE" MANDERS

November 10, 1928 - October 1, 2009

American Flag.jpg Charles "Charlie" Nicholas MANDERS, 80, died on October 1, 2009. Charlie was born November 10, 1928 to Ralph and Josephine MANDERS in Des Moines, Iowa. He graduated from Waukee high school in 1946 and served in the Army during the Korean Police Action and served his time in Germany. For a short time he played professional baseball in California. He worked as a lumber salesman for 45 years and retired from Gilcrest Lumber. In addition, he was an excellent draftsman. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Ellston and lay leader, a member of the American Legion Post #541 and Tingley Lions Club. Charlie enjoyed his kitchen band, "Charlie's Revue," and spent many hours of entertaining at nursing homes and meal sites and was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs.

Charlie is survived by his wife, Bonnie, of Ellston, Iowa; children from his first marriage, Debbie (Doug) PAUP of Davenport, Iowa, Pam (Larry) BAILIFF of Polk City, Iowa, Karen KIENE of Waukee, Iowa, Charles (Janet) MANDERS Jr. of Columbus, Mississippi and Marcia (Terry) FRAHM; stepdaughters, Kathy FIEDLER (Jerry) of Van Meter, Iowa, Teresa HAMBRICK of Van Meter, Iowa and Nancy (James) GOODE; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lucille CARROLL of Stuart, Iowa and Mary Ann (Howard) MATHESON of LeMars, Iowa.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Services were held at the United Methodist Church in Ellston on Monday, October 5, 2009. Rev. Dan FERNANDEZ officiated. Musicians included the church choir, the bell choir, Dave Patch and Edith Wood. Casket bearers were Chuck MANDERS, Brendan MANDERS, Danny SCARPINO, Chad BAILIFF, Jason PAUP, Matt KIENE, Justin CAMPBELL and Ronald CREVELING.

Honorary pallbearers were Kenny SCARPINO, Bill WEBB, David JENNINGS, Sean MANDERS and in memory of Ronald OLSON.

Military rites were conducted by American Legion Post #541.

Charlie was laid at rest in the Waukee Cemetery, Waukee, Iowa.
