OBITUARY - JAMES EDWIN MAHAN

James Edwin MAHAN died at the Ringgold Co. Hospital Oct. 11, 1982, at the age of 83. He was born on May 9, 1899 in Bedford, Indiana, the son of Thomas and Caroline WOODRUFF MAHAN. He was married to Ettie Catherine LUCAS on Feb. 2, 1919 in McKinney, Texas. To this union was born Dorothy Jean (Mrs. Wendell CASKEY), Gertrude Margaret (Mrs. Keith BAKER), James Edwin MAHAN, Jr. and Bettye Catherine (Mrs. Jack COATES).

Mr. MAHAN moved permanently, with his family, to Mount Ayr in 1929 and was owner of MAHAN Granite Co. until his retirement. He served his community in various capacities throughout his life as a member of the draft board during World War II, a member of the city council and as mayor of Mount Ayr. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and Ringgold Sportsman Club and held various offices.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife of 47 years in 1966.

He is survived by and will be sadly missed by a sister, Catherine BELLAMY, his four children, 18 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Oct. 13 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mount Ayr, Iowa. Officiating were Fr. Donald DALEKE, Fr. James KIERNAN, Fr. Frank CHIODO and Fr. Alfonso E. ERESTAIN. Music was by Mrs. Jim JONES and Mrs. Robert FISHER, accompanied by Mike GREENE. Casketbearers were grandsons. Honorary pall bearers were Home BUTLER and Lester GRIMES. Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery at Mount Ayr, with Wilson-Watson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Ringgold County Hospital.

Only A Dad
Only a Dad, but he gives his all,
To smooth the way for children small;
Doing with courage stern and grim
The deeds that his father did for him.
This is a line that for him I pen -
Only a Dad - but the best of men!
