Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, March 27 2008
Charles William LAWHEAD was born at Mount Ayr Iowa on July 13, 1920, the only child of Carlton C. LAWHEAD and Ferrah Gladys
(LEAZENBY) LAWHEAD, and departed this life on March 13, 2008. He graduated from Mount Ayr, Iowa High School in 1938 and the
University of Iowa earning a B.S. then D.D.S. degree in 1943.
On December 29, 1941 he married his high school sweetheart
and classmate, Florence Olive ABARR After his graduation from dental school, he entered the U.S. Army Dental Corp during
World War II, retiring with a rank of Captain. In 1946 he began his dental profession in Mount Ayr continuing until 1984.
His love for children and children's dentistry prompted him to do extra training for his orthodontic practice, opening his
office on Saturdays to accommodate students who sometimes traveled up to 100 miles. Charles was a member of the Iowa State
Dental Society, the American Dental Association, the President's Club, and the University of Iowa Foundation.
Charles and Florence are the parents of three children: Camille JACKSON of Kellerton, Iowa; Collus LAWHEAD of Mount Ayr,
Iowa; and Carlin of Muscatine, Iowa. His children, grand children, and great grand children have been a source of joy.
Charles loved his Christian Church in Mount Ayr where he served as Sunday school superintendent, elder, deacon, and on the
church board. He was a member of Masonic orders, Shrine, and Order of Eastern Star where he served as Iowa Grand Sentinel
in 1970; a life member of the American Legion where he served as chaplain for many years; a member of the Mount Ayr Golf
and Country Club; and the last living member of the group that formed the Mount Ayr Lion's Club in 1947. One of the most
fun things he did was announcing local sporting events at the Mount Ayr High School for many years. After moving to Mesa,
Charles transferred his church membership form the Ellston United Methodist Church to the Velda Rose United Methodist
Music was always a foremost part of his life. Charles played trombone in high school and in the University of
Iowa marching band. One of the highlights for both he and Florence musically was the family band at Sun Valley Lake on the
4th of July when everyone in the family played a concert on the lawn next to the lake. Charles sang in high school and in
the University of Iowa mixed chorus. He enjoyed being a part of church choirs, and soon after he joined Velda Rose, he
became a member of the choir. He derived much pleasure from the music, other choir members, and especially Dr. HUGHES, with
whom he exhibited his unique sense of humor.
Charles belonged to the Fountain of the Sun Country Club where he was
president of his 9 hole golf group. He loved playing bridge and pitch with his special buddies. Traveling was a most
enjoyable part of his life. He and Florence traveled many places with the Northwest Missouri Alumni group and made at least
two trips back to Iowa each year until his health prevented it three years ago.
His family left are his wife Florence of
66 years; his daughter Camille and husband Richard JACKSON of Kellerton, Iowa; his son Collus LAWHEAD and wife Jane of Mount
Ayr, Iowa; and his son Carlin LAWHEAD and wife Vicki of Muscatine, Iowa. Grand children are Racinda (JACKSON) GODBOLD and
husband Dave of Windsor, Colorado; Randall JACKSON and wife Theresa of Des Moines, Iowa; Lauran (LAWHEAD) HOFFMAN and
husband Dave of Missouri Valley, Iowa; David LAWHEAD and wife Paula of Lauderdale, Minnesota; and Christopher and Connor
LAWHEAD of Muscatine, Iowa. Great grand children are Ashton HOFFMAN; Nicholas and Eleanor JACKSON; and Cyan GODBOLD.
