OBITUARY - WILLIAM HENRY LATHROP

November 18, 1900 - April 12, 2002

Centenarian William Henry LATHROP died at his Port Angeles residence at the age of 101.

Mr. LATHROP was born in Raritan, Ill., the youngest of four children of Row and Emily (WAIGHT) LATHROP, who had emigrated from England. He graduated from Mount Ayr High School in Iowa in 1921, where he was an honor student. He earned a degree in journalism from the University of Missouri, then joined the faculty and taught at the school from 1929 to 1935. After leaving the University, Mr. LATHROP worked for 30 years as an information specialist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

In 1937, Mr. LATHROP married Velma BRYSON, and the couple made their home in Des Moines, Iowa. They loved to travel and eventually discovered the Olympic Peninsula and Port Angeles, where they moved in 1965. They became Klahane Club members in 1970, and Mr. Lathrop served as Klahane Club president in 1971. He also continued to pursue his interest in photography during his retirement, becoming president of the local camera club and winning numerous photography competitions.

In 1988, Velma LATHROP died after a struggle with cancer. In 1990, Mr. LATHROP married Lucina CAHILL, who had been widowed in 1984; she died in July 2001.

He is survived by two step-sons, Richard CAHILL of Port Angeles and Steve CAHILL of Port Orchard.

Services: A private memorial service will be held for members of the immediate family and close friends. The Olympic Cremation Association is in charge of arrangements. Memorials: Hospice of Clallam County, P.O. Box 2014, Port Angeles, WA 98362.
