OBITUARY - OLETA M. (HIGDAY) LAMPHIEAR, 86
Oleta M. LAMPHIEAR, 86, of Grand Island died Sunday, August 19, 2007, at home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Apfel Funeral Home, with the Rev. Richard KAROHL officiating. Burial will be
in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with family receiving friends from 4 to 6.
Mrs. LAMPHIEAR was born October 9, 1920, at Kellerton, Iowa, to George E. and Dottie H. (MICKAEL) HIGDAY.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer LAMPHIEAR.
Survivors of the immediate family include four daughters and
two sons-in-law, Kay and LeRoy PETERSON of Lincoln, Ann and Marlin HINRICHS of Grand Island, Susan LAMPHIEAR of Glendale,
Ariz., and Julie LAMPHIEAR of Irving, Texas; and three sisters, Evelyn DIES of Hastings, Rosalie DRAPER of Des Moines,
Iowa, and Melba TAYLOR of Grand River, Iowa.
Additional survivors include three grandchildren, Scott and his wife,
Becky PETERSON, Tammy and her husband, Scott BASTIN and Sarah HINRICHS; and three great-grandchildren, Lauren, Joseph and
She grew up in Kellerton and graduated from Kellerton High School. She was united in marriage to Elmer
LAMPHIEAR on May 21, 1940, at Albany, Mo. The couple lived in various cities, where Elmer worked in the construction
industry. In the mid-'40s, they started LAMPHIEAR Construction in Hastings. She also owned and operated Griff's Burger
Bar in Hastings. They moved to Omaha in 1969 and then to Central City in 1972, founding Elmer LAMPHIEAR Construction
there. The couple retired in 1983 and moved to Grand Island in 1989. Mr. LAMPHIEAR preceded Oleta in death on April 29,
She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church, a member of DOES, BPW, TOPS and the Methodist Women's Circle.
Throughout her life she was active in parent-teachers association and The Mother Singers. She enjoyed gardening and
baking. Her bread was always high in demand.
Oleta loved to laugh and never met a stranger. She fully embraced every
moment of her life with curiosity and enthusiasm.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and two sisters.
Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.
