The Mount Ayr Record-News, 1930

OBITUARY - CHARLES LAIRD.

Charles Warren LAIRD, eldest son of John Wesley and Matilda (WALKER) LAIRD, was born in the town of Athens, in Athens county, Ohio, on September 21, 1863, and died at the home of his brother, Elza A. LAIRD, near Kellerton, Iowa, on May 16, 1930, aged 66 years, seven months and 5 days. When a small child he came with his parents to Ringgold county where he has since made his home except a few years when he was homesteading in western Kansas. In December, 1883, he was united in marriage to Miss Lavina KINDER of Hatfield, Mo. To this union six children were born, Owen, Rollie, Nora, Elma and Elva who were twins, and Leota, of which four are deceased. In 1894 he was again married to Miss Anna BRYAN, of the Kellerton vicinity. To this union three children were born, Vernon, Claude and Winona, of which two have preceded him in death.

During his early manhood he was a properous farmer, but of later years he has had failing health and suffered revereses, and for three months this spring was in the hospital at Iowa City. Since his return home he was apparently gaining in health until a short time ago he contracted pneumonia, and after a weeks' illness he passed away.

He is survived by three children, Rollie and Mrs. Ed DAVIS of this vicinity and Vernon of Hoopston, Ill.; twenty grandchildren and one great grandchild. Also one sister, Mrs. Mabel SALTZMAN of Tingley, and four brothers, Herman Lucius, (known as Bud) and Elza A. of this place, Homer of Lenox, and William L. of Eagle, colo. One sister, Mrs. Luella THOMPSON, and one brother, Edward Parker, with the aged father and mother, having preceded him in death.

A good neighbor, he numbered his friends with his acquaintances, and he will be greatly missed.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church at this place on Sunday afternoon at two-thirty, conducted by Rev. J. E. CLARK and interment made in Maple Row cemetery [Kellerton].
