OBITUARY ~ CHARLOTTE ANN JONES

Charlotte Ann JONES, internationally known children's non-fiction author, entered immortality at 3:10 p.m. July 16, 2007 after a brave yet taxing 10-year battle against ovarian cancer. She was 61.

Born early November 1, 1945 to Mildred DEIBERT FOLTZ and Forrest FOLTZ, she was a lifelong resident of Boulder, Colorado. Charlotte was a 1963 Boulder high graduate and a 1964 graduate of Denver's Central Business College.

Charlotte worked at Beach Aircraft in the production control department between 1964-65 where she provided office administration functions for the space program. She worked in the follow through department with the Boulder Valley Public School district under Elizabeth TREADWELL and Ann RAMIREZ from 1966 until 1975 when her son, John Paul JONES, was born.

Charlotte dedicated herself to being a stay-at-home mother, as time permitted; she began pursuing a growing interest in writing. She honed her skills as a freelance writer and is credited with having over 125 magazine articles published since 1977.

She discovered her passion was researching fascinating topics that children could benefit from and dedicated her career to this charge. Charlotte has had nine books published in several languages, including "Mistakes That Worked," "Accidents May Happen" and "fingerprints and Talking Bones." Charlotte's most recent work "Westward ho! Eleven Explorers of the West" (the story of 11 intrepid explorers who opened the West and brought back knowledge that changed the course of North American history) won the 2006 National Cowboy Museum's Western Heritage Wrangler Award for Children's Literature. Her upcoming book due out this year which remains untitled will focus on animals that have held political offices throughout history.

Charlotte knew the importance of sharing her knowledge of children's books with others and aligned herself with the Boulder Valley Public Schools Lifelong Learning Program as an adult education writing instructor. She held the office of president (1989-90) of the Society of Children's Book Writer & Illustrations - Rocky Mountain Chapter.

Civil service was another important facet of Charlotte's life. She served as a Boulder county election judge for 15 years and was president captain during the final years of her service.

As an adult, Charlotte derived feelings of solace and fulfillment from trivial yet blissful moments with her son, John Paul, and her husband, Bill, long philosophical discussions and historical meanderings with Phil RICE and serene walks with her confidant, Sharon WINN. Charlotte loved games of solitaire, solving Sudoku puzzles and creating papier-mache sculpture inspired by South Western patterns.

Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents, Mildred and Forrest FOLTZ, who were both born and raised in Ringgold county.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Bill JONES of Boulder, Colorado; her son, John Paul JONES, also of Boulder, Colorado; two aunts, Edna RYAN of Nevada, Iowa, and Donella HARTMAN of Mount Ayr, Iowa, and several cousins.

Funeral services were held at the Crist Mortuary Chapel in Boulder on Friday, July 20, 2007. Interment was in the Mountain View Cemetery in Boulder.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of Boulder and Broomfield Counteis, 1855 Plaza Drive, Lousville, CO 80027.
