OBITUARY ~ LELAND (LEE) WALTER JACKSON
January 30, 1913 ~ May 14, 1994

Leland (Lee) Walter Jackson, son of Walter John Jackson and Rachel Mary Ryan Jackson, was born January 30, 1913, in a farm house in Union Township, near Ellston, Iowa and passed away suddenly on May 14, 1994, at the Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr, Iowa.

Lee was united in marriage to Lucile B. Buell on June 26, 1938 and they enjoyed 35 years of marriage. They were married in Collins, Iowa, in a double wedding ceremony with Normand and Oletha Barbour Moon, now of Omaha, Nebraska. In 1988, Lee and Lucile celebrated a double 50th wedding anniversary open house with the Moons, who have remained their close friends. Two daughters were born to Lee and Lucile; Jeanine Kay Walters and Sandra Lee Main.

Lee and Lucile lived in Mount Ayr, Beaconsfield and Des Moines in their early married life. Lee was in the United States Army during WWII, serving in the South Pacific. He returned home to Ellston in 1946 and together, Lee and Lucile, opened and operated the Ellston Locker Service for 32 years until his retirement in 1978.

After retiring Lee enjoyed woodworking, crafts, word puzzles and working around the house and yard. Up until the last three years, Lee enjoyed helping and plant and harvest crops in his son-in-law, Jack's, farming operation. Lee's favorite hobby was square dancing, sometimes dancing three or four nights a week and traveling all over the Unites States to attend national square dance conventions. Together, he and Lucile, met many friends over the years and he cherished those friendships dearly. For the last several years Lee and Lucile have wintered in Alamo, Texas, with their square dance friends. He was a member of the Ellston American Legion.

One of Lee's great joys was his family and he loved them dearly. He was always interested in what the "kids" were doing, always there to help out and offer advice. He got great pleasure out of making things with his woodworking and craft skills to give each of his "kids" for Christmas.

Those preceding him in death were his parents; nine brothers, Vernie Jackson, Clarence Jackson, Charles Jackson, Clyde Jackson, Ray Jackson, Roy Jackson, Ted Jackson, Earl Jackson and an infant brother; three sisters, Velma Clark, Jessie Hoffmann and Golda Long.

Those left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Lucile Jackson of Ellston, Iowa; sister-in-law, Faith Buell of Windsor Heights, Iowa; daughters Jeanine and husband Bernard Walters of Chariton, Iowa, and Sandy and husband, Jack Main of Mount Ayr, Iowa; grandchildren, Denise and husband Barry Smith and Rick and wife Missy Walters of Chariton, Iowa, Chad Main and Nikki Main of Mount Ayr, Iowa; one sister, Florence Cone of Des Moines; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 16, 1994 from the Methodist church in Ellston, Iowa, conducted by Rev. Donald Campbell. Music was provided by Mrs. Robert Thomas and Arlen Hughes.

Casketbearers were Chad Main, Barry Smith, Lloyd Buell, Rick Walters, Ronald Long and Larry Buell. Burial was in the Ellston Cemetery at Ellston, Iowa.

Military graveside rites were conducted by Ringgold Post #172, American Legion.
