OBITUARY ~ FRANK HUNT

Last rites were held Oct. 31 in Diagonal for Frank Hunt, 52, who died Oct. 28 in the collapse of a grain storage facility in Mt. Ayr.

Hunt was delivering grain to the elevator when the accident occurred. Also killed was an employee of FS Grain and Feed, Larry Gregg, 37, Kellerton.

The Rev. Eydie Deal officiated at services for Mr. Hunt at the Diagonal High School. Burial was in Diagonal Cemetery, Wilson-Watson Funeral Home of Mt. Ayr in charge.

Mr. Hunt was born May 18, 1934, in Ponca City, Okla., son of Robert M. and Marche Newman Hunt. He and Lois Ann Jeans were married Aug. 27, 1966, in Ponca City.

They moved to Diagonal in 1969, where he farmed. He was a member of the Iowa Cattlemen's Association, Ringgold County Cattlemen's association and the Diagonal Lions Club. [Frank served with the U. S. Army.]

In addition to his wife, Lois of the home, he leaves three daughters, Vanette, Billie and Bobbi of Diagonal; his parents of Pawhuska, Okla.; two brothers, Bill of Chicago and Tom of Pawhuska; a sister, Mary Gillispie of Wenatchee, Wash.

Hunt and Gregg were unloading beans from a farm truck onto the overhead structure when it collapsed, tearing down the auger assembly tower and puncturing two adjacent grain bins. The truck and the men were buried by debris, Beans and corn. Rescuers worked almost 13 hours to recover the bodies. The structure which collapsed was one of two at the elevator company which are designed so grain can be unloaded into floor grates to be augered to storage. The overhead structures have bins which are used to load semi trailers. The structure fell approximately one and one-half stories to the ground, carrying the auger assembly tower with it and puncturing two adjacent grain storage bins.

Authorities said the two men were buried under more than nine tons of debris and grain.
