OBITUARY - LAVERNE JEROME KLEJCH

LaVerne Jerome KLEJCH, son of Jerry and Lillian (JEZEK) KLEJCH, was born at the farm home three miles southeast of Diagonal, Iowa on May 14, 1923. He attended the Fairview Country School through the eighth grade and graduated from Diagonal high school in May, 1941.

He farmed and worked at various jobs until called for service duty during World War II when he served in the Army for three years. After his return home, he joined forces with a neighbor, Lewis SLAVIK, and they installed electrical wiring to many of the local homes and farm buildings as the Rural Electric Association was implemented in this area. He rented farm ground in Washington township and continued to make his home with his parents.

On November 4, 1956, he married Betty Lorraine McNUTT. LaVerne and Betty purchased his parents' farm in 1957, and Jerry and Lillian moved to town. During the 14 years they lived there, their five children were born. While farming, LaVerne continued his electrical work and also was a substitute mail carrier for Dean RISSER.

In 1971, Betty and he were divorced. After he sold the farm, LaVerne continued to work as a self-employed electrician and became a full-time rural mail carrier. He retired from the Post Office with 27 years of service.

He enjoyed his retirement by fishing and tinkering with cars and electrical appliances. LaVerne was a life-time member of the American Legion, having served as commander, and was also a member of the Rural Mail Carrier Association.

He died Thursday, November 4, 1999, at the Crest Haven Care Center in Creston after a long time struggle with his health.

He is survived by three sons, Kevin Lee (wife Bobbi) of Creston, Charles Jerome of Diagonal, and Curtis Allen (wife Karen) of Creston; two daughters, Rebecca Lorraine (husband Brian) of Leon and Kristy Joyce of Martensdale; eight grandchildren; a brother, Norman (wife Doris) of Mount Ayr; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Services were at the United Church of Diagonal on Monday, November 8, 1999 with Reverend Pam FARREN officiating. Musicians were Judy NEWTON, Janis TAYLOR and Dixie TAYLOR. Casketbearers were Charles FLETCHER, Mack MOFFITT, Bill BENTLEY, Brian COOK, Cory KOUNEN and Bob GRAHAM. Honorary pallbearers were Marvin SOBOTKA, Bernard SOBOTKA, Junior JEZEK, Eddie AUSTIN, R. A. BEYMER and A. J. KESSLER.

Interment was in the Bohemian Cemetery, Diagonal. Military graveside rites were conducted by Morris-Herrold Post #395 American Legion.
