The Mount Ayr Record-News, 1933

DEATH of SAML. F. KATER.

Saml. F. KATER, 71 years of age and a resident of Ringgold county for more than half a century, died Sunday, July 30, at the home of his son, John S. KATER, Pine River, Minn., after a brief illness. Announcement of his death, which cast the shadow of sorrow over the community, did not come as a complete surprise. On Friday, July 21, in company with Mrs. KATER and their daughter Elizabeth, he left by automobile for Pine River for a visit at the home of his son. En route he suffered a paralytic stroke and soon after reaching Pine River another stroke caused grave apprehension and members of the family were summoned. He lingered until Sunday when life passed out.

Probably no man in Ringgold county enjoyed a wider acquaintance with the people of the county than did Mr. KATER, and his character was such as to command the respect of all with whom he came in contact. When 20 years of age he came to Ringgold county and settled on a farm in Lotts Creek township, where the greater part of his active life was spent. For the past 12 years he has resided in Mount Ayr where he was engaged in the insurance business, serving as secretary of the Ringgold County Mutual Fire Insurance Company. He was ever interested in the community to which he rendered unselfish service.

The high regard in which he was held was attested by the large attendance at the funeral services which were held yesterday (Wednesday) forenoon at 11 o'clock at the Rhoades Funeral Home. The services were conducted by Rev. L. H. WOOD, former pastor of the Evangelical church at Ringgold City, assisted by Rev. E. S. MENOHER, pastor of the Mount Ayr Methodist church. Burial was in the Ringgold cemetery.

Samuel McFadden KATER was born in Philadelphia, Pa., March 31, 1862, and departed this life July 30, 1933, aged 71 years, three months and 30 days.

Mr. KATER came west in 1882 and settled in Ringgold county, Iowa where he has since resided. The deceased was converted in a revivial held in the Ringgold school house in 1884, Dr. LOCK, an Evangelical minister, conducted the meeting and organized the church. The following year the Ringgold church was built, Mr. KATER being the leading spirit in the project, and became a charter member where he has since held his membership.

About twelve years ago he gave up farm life and moved to Mount Ayr, where he engaged in the insurance business. On May 17, 1885, he was united in marriage to Miss May CASE. To this union were born eight children, three sons and five daughters. One son, Archie, and a daughter, little Madge, preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his death two sons and four daughters and a devoted wife: Mrs. Frank DONELSON, of Creston, Iowa; Mrs. Earl BUTLER, of Mount Ayr, Iowa; Mrs. Homer HAKE, of Reinbeck, Iowa; Miss Elizabeth Belle, of Mount Ayr, Iowa; John S. KATER, of Pine River, Minn., and Mark KATER of Ringgold, Iowa; also 16 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Mr. KATER enjoyed the respect of all his business associates and friendship of all who knew him. As a Christian he was faithful to his God and the church of his choice. As a husband and father he was devoted to his wife and family.

"Servant of God, well done!
Thy glorious warfare's past,
The battle's fought, the race is won,
And thou art crowned at last."

NOTE: Miriam "May" (CASE) KATER was born in 1867, and died in 1946. Archie KATER, son of Samuel McFadden and Miriam "May" (CASE), was born in 1889 and died on June 8, 1893. Madge KATER, daughter of Samuel McFadden and Miriam "May" (CASE), was born in 1891, and died on February 26, 1892. Mark F. KATER, son of Samuel McFadden and Miriam "May" (CASE), was born in 1894, and died in 1963. All interments were at Ringgold Cemetery, Ringgold County, Iowa.
