Diagonal Vindicator
Diagonal, Ringgold County, Iowa

Joseph D. KAFKA was born at Bubenec Klasterec, Zamberk, Bohemia, on May 6, 1842 and died in Diagonal, Iowa, October 30, 1919, having reached the age of 77 years, 5 months and 24 days. On August 3, 1868 he was united in marriage to Rosalie TREJTNAR; to this union was born seven children, four of them preceding their father in death. The children living are: Mrs. G. M. [Pauline] CARLISLE of Diagonal, Iowa, George KAFKA of Spokane, Washington, and Joseph A. KAFKA of St. Joseph, Missouri.

Mr. KAFKA came to America in 1866 and spent the first seven years here near Mt. Ayr, Iowa, after which he moved to Lenox and lived there for twenty seven years.

Since 1900 he has made his home in Diagonal. Mr. KAFKA was a cabinet maker in the old country and later spent much of his time as a contractor and builder. He built many houses and churches in and around Lenox and also about this community.

People often commented on his excellent workmanship. He was always industrious and conscientious in his work. He was a good upright man who made friends wherever he went.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. AHRENS, pastor of the Presbyterian church of Diagonal, Iowa, on Sunday morning. A short service was held at the house at 10:00 o'clock and at 11:00 o'clock the main services were held at the Bohemian church. [Interment at Bohemian Cemetery, rural Diagonal, Ringgold County, Iowa.]

NOTE: Joseph was a cabinet maker and owned his own shop in 1910. The deceased children of Joseph D. and Rosalia (TREJTNAR) KAFKA: John KAFKA, born February 1870, died 1873; Felix KAFKA, born 1884, died 1886: Anna KAFKA, born 1871, died 1873; and, William KAKFA, born 1873, died 1879; as per census and cemetery records.

In the summer of 1866, Joseph D. KAFKA, the Antonin JEZEK family, and the Vit DOLECHECK family came to Ringgold county from their home in Klasterec, Czechoslovakia. The voyage across the Atlantic Ocean took six weeks.
