OBITUARY

James Albert JONES, son of Owen Zell and Bessie (TAYLOR) JONES PERRY was born on a farm northwest of Diagonal on December 13, 1929 and died of cancer at the Ringgold County Hospital on February 28, 1998 at the age of 62 years, 2 months and 15 days.

He attended the Bliss Country School until 1944 when the family moved to the farm on Blackmore Corner south of Ellston. There he attended the Zwick School until his high school days. His freshman and sophomore years were spent at Ellston High School and he then transferred to Mount Ayr High School graduating with the class of 1948. He was an outstanding basketball player on a team coached by Pop VARNER.

On June 12,1948, he was united in marriage to Edna WALTER and to this union three children were born, James Steven, Barry Alan and Kathy Lyn.

After their marriage, Jim and Edna lived in the Garland Hotel in Bedford for a short time where Jim was employed by the Cudahy Company. In 1949, they purchased a farm south of Blackmore Corner where they raised their family. Jim was an active member of the Ellston Methodist Church where he served faithfully in many capacities including Sunday school superintendent and lay leader. They particularly enjoyed the friendships they formed through their monthly neighborhood card parties. During this time, Jim was a 4-H leader for the Kellerton Hustlers.

In 1967, Jim moved his family one-mile down the road when he purchased the Drake farm. He and Edna moved to Mount Ayr in 1973 and Jim continued to farm with his son, Steve, until 1987.

Jim was elected to the Ringgold County Board of Supervisors in 1980, a position he held for 16 years. He worked part-time at Gerold's Plumbing and Heating until his failing health forced him to turn in his key. Jim was a member of the Mount Ayr Lions, Chamber of Commerce, Mount Ayr Golf and Country Club, First Christian Church, where he served as deacon, SICOG board and the South Central Iowa Development Corporation. Jim's family was his first priority. He loved to watch his children as they participated in school activities and also attended his grandchildren's many recitals and ballgames. He was so proud of each of them and always had a picture to show.

Jim was a friend to everyone. His sense of humor, his quiet manner, his honesty, and his willingness to help anyone in need are the qualities that he will be remembered by.
