Ringgold Record, 1886

OBITUARY.

DIED:--Mrs. Phoebe JOHNSTON, of Liberty township, on Saturday, April 10, 1886, in her 54 year.

The suddenness of her death adds a melancholy interest to the sad incident. She and her husband Capt. A. JOHNSTON, had gone to the [Johnston] cemetery on their farm, and were clearing it off. They were working on opposite sides of the knoll on which the cemetery is situated, he cutting some trees and she fixing the graves. He injured his hand, and went to have her tie it up. Upon arriving at the place she was working, he found her lying motionless, and upon further examination he was horrified to find that life was extinct. The cause was thought to be paralysis of the heart. Quiet a number went from Mt. Ayr to witness the last sad rites. She sleeps within a few feet of the spot where she breathed her last.

She was born in Knox county, Ohio, in 1833 (sic, should be October 24, 1832), and married to Mr. JOHNSTON in 1855. They came to Ringgold county in 1856. She joined the Baptist church when about sixteen years of age. She united with the M.E. church after coming to this county. She was a noble woman, a true helpmeet (sic) and a fond mother. Her devotion to her family was remarked by all who knew her, and the community loses one of its brightest lights. Beside her husband there are three children, (all grown) and a brother, Mr. Job RUSH, to mourn her. To them it is an irreparable loss.

NOTE: Phoebe (RUSH) JOHNSTON died on April 17, 1886 with interment at Johnston Cemetery near Kellerton, Ringgold County, Iowa. Her husband, Capt. Andrew JOHNSTON was born on February 11, 1829, and died on December 19, 1917. He was interred at Johnston Cemetery.
