OBITUARY - GEORGE WESLEY JOHNSTON

George Wesley JOHNSTON was born in Albia, Iowa, on May 23, 1899, to Andrew Jackson JOHNSTON and Bertha May OLNEY JOHNSTON. He died December 11, 1981, at the age of 82 years, six months and 18 days.

When he was very young the family moved to southern Ringgold County on a farm. During his school years he attended schools at Watterson, Iowa; St. Joseph, Missouri; Kansas City, Kansas; and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Before his marriage he worked several summers at Yellowstone National Park. In 1920 he went to Montana with his father who had homesteaded a ranch in Sweetgrass County. It was here he met Marjory GUTHRIE and was married March 10, 1922, in Livingston, Montana. To this union was born four children: three sons, George Wesley, Jr., Walter Neil, Allen Andrew, and one daughter, Rose Marie.

Over the years they have made their home in Montana, California and Kansas. They came to Iowa in 1943. George made his living as a welder and farmer. Before retirement in 1964 he owned and operated a welding shop in Mount Ayr and later operated one in Leon.

After his retirement he and his wife made their home with their son, Walter Neil, on a farm in this area where he resided at the time of his death.

When a small child he was baptized in the Fry Chapel Methodist Church in Ringgold County. During his lifetime he lived by the Golden Rule, "Do Unto Others As You Would Wish Others To Do Unto You." He was a kind and loving husband and father and always willing to help a friend or neighbor.

While living in Kansas City, he was a member of the Eagles Lodge.

Left to mourn his passing are his four children, two daughters-in-law, one son-in-law, ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, two brothers-in-law, one sister-in-law, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death are his parents, two grandchildren and one sister-in-law.

Funeral services were held from the Wilson-Watson Funeral Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa, on December 14, 1981, conducted by Rev. Dennis NEAL. Organist was Mrs. Robert THOMAS, and vocalists Debbie JOHNSTON and Darla JOHNSTON. Casketbearers were Tim SAVILLE, Kevin JAMES, Ron JOHNSTON, Steve JOHNSTON, Darren JOHNSTON, Delano JOHNSTON. Interment was in Hickory Grove Cemetery.

NOTE: Marjory died May 10, 1996, and was interred at Hickory Grove Cemetery.
