DEATH of H. V. JOHNSON.
Was Resident of Ringgold County Fifty-seven Years
Death Follows Paralytic Stroke.
Father Henry V. JOHNSON died at his home in Mt. Ayr, Saturday morning, October 5th, 1895, aged 78 years, seven months and
twenty-one days. Mr. JOHNSON had been declining in health and ailing for several weeks and had been patiently waiting and
watching for the end. He died full of years and days. He was born in Franklin county Pennsylvania, Feb. 14, 1817. He was
removed with his parents to Washington county, Penna., early in life, so early that he could not recall any of the incidents.
In 1835, and when he was but eighteen years of age, he left the old home in Pennsylvania resolved to make a new home farther
west. He walked all the way to Knox county, Ohio, and arranged for a home. He then borrowed a team from an uncle and
returned to Pennsylvania to bring his parents to their new home. He was full of life and energy and gladly endured the toils
and trials incident to pioneer life of those days.
On October 28, 1840, he was united in marriage to Miss Nancy JOHNSON, having the same name, although in no way related so far
as known. Mrs. JOHNSON still survives. They had passed their golden wedding, and on the coming 28th day of October would
have lived together fifty-five years, something unusual. They had six children, five of whom are living, two sons and three
daughters. All of them attended the father's funeral.
In middle life Mr. JOHNSON was an exceedingly active, pushing
business man, and engaged largely in manufacturing, farming and stockraising. In 1857 or about that time, he united with
the Green Valley M. E. church Ohio, and renewed this relation in the M. E. church in Mt. Ayr, and derived much enjoyment
from association with people of God. For a time he had united with the Congregational church, this relation being indicated
by comfort and convenience. He moved to Iowa in 1871 and since that time has been idenitified with Ringgold county. He had
set his house in order for death and requested Rev. B. H. HIMEBAUGH to conduct the funeral, which he did, preaching from 1st
Thess. 4:13-14. Mr. JOHNSON had in some measure rest from his labors in Mt. Ayr and had made many friends who attended his
funeral and followed the remains to the burial place in the south [Rose Hill] cemetery on Monday, Oct. 7th 1895.
NOTE: Henry's wife, Nancy (JOHNSON) JOHNSON, was born in Pennsylvania on April 1, 1817, and died in Mount Ayr on May 4, 1907 with interment at
Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa.
