OBITUARY - VERA A. (CASADY) HURST

Vera A. HURST, of New Hartford, Iowa, died Wednesday morning, May 10, 2006, at the Allison Health Care Center, Allison, Iowa. She was born on June 16, 1911 near Mt. Ayr, Iowa, the daughter of Albert and Inez (MARSHALL) CASADY. She graduated from high school in Park Rapids, Minnesota, and then went to work for the Tuberculosis Sanitarium in Walker, Minnesota. It was while working at the sanitarium that she met her future husband, Clarence Hurst, and the couple was united in marriage on August 9, 1933, in Park Rapids. In 1937 they moved to Iowa and settled in Cedar Falls. In 1955 they moved to New Hartford and over the next years Vera and Clarence together ran a Malt Shoppe, bakery and later the Benson General Store. In 1995 the couple moved to the Allison Care Center where Clarence died on November 10, 1998.

Vera was a member of the First Baptist Church, New Hartford, where she had taught Sunday school and played the organ. She was a very talented musician, playing organ, piano and flute. She also enjoyed crocheting, emrboidering and raising her garden. Vera was a great hostess and on the holidays she would hold the family dinners after which they would gather around the piano and sing for hours. She was a jack-of-all trades and could even shingle the roof.

She is survived by her three daughters, Betty (Ray) ACKERSON of New Hartford, Elaine KELSEY of Akeley, Minnesota, Ardy (Dean) AVENSON of Cedar Falls; two sons, Donald (Erika) HURST of Cedar Falls and Harold (Irene) HURST who are fulltime RV’ers. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 21 great-great-grandchildren, one sister, Grace MESSER of Henning, Minnesota, and one brother, Allen CASADY of Waverly, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence; one son-in-law, Franklin KELSEY; three granddaughters, and two sisters, Babe THIEL and Alta MESSER.

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 13, 2006, at the First Baptist Church, New Hartford, with Pastor Ben EPLEY officiating. Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery, New Hartford. Memorials may be directed to the church and condolences may be left at www.kaisercorson.com.
