OBITUARY - RALPH HAROLD HOOVER

Services for Ralph HOOVER, age 93, of Fountain Hills, Arizona, formerly of Coon Rapids and Blockton will be Sunday at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford at 2:00. Burial will be held at the Redding Cemetery in Redding. Memorials can be given in his name. Memories can be shared with the family on our web site at www.ritchiefuneralhome.com under Obituaries. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford.

Ralph HOOVER was born in Blockton, Iowa on December 4, 1913, the son of Charles Edward and Mamie HOOVER. Charles and Mamie had an older daughter, Lueva, who preceded Ralph in death at the age of 41.

Ralph graduated from Blockton High School with the Class of 1932 and worked with his father on their farm near Blockton. He entered in marriage with Hazel Helen WALSTON on October 27, 1935, and continued to farm in shares with his father. His father went on to become deputy sheriff of Ringgold County, Iowa while Ralph and Hazel continued to work the family farm.

One son was born to Ralph and Hazel, Gary Dean HOOVER, on December 7, 1938. There are four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

In 1947, Ralph and Hazel moved to Coon Rapids, Iowa where he operated a service station. In 1949, Ralph started a new career as a car salesman, working for Morrie Powers in the Chevrolet dealership in Coon Rapids. This, apparently, was his calling as he worked in this position for thirty years and did very well.

During their fifty year stay in Coon Rapids, Ralph became very active in the community. He first of all served his church faithfully, the First Methodist Church, primarily aw head usher. He served as a councilman on the town council for eight years. He served as a board member on the Municipal Utilities board for twelve years during which several large construction projects were completed for the Coon Rapids utilities.

In 1999, Ralph and Hazel moved to Arizona to be closer to their son, Gary, and to enjoy the warm and dry climate. While in Coon Rapids, Ralph worked hard on maintaining his house and adjoining yard. It was quite fitting then, that their place in Arizona was right next to a golf course where Ralph could enjoy the green grass each day but not have to work hard maintaining it.

In October of 2004, Ralph and Hazel had a formal restatement of their vows to mark their 69th wedding anniversary. This touching love story was featured on TV news networks around the nation and in Glamour magazine.

On January 31, 2007, Ralph succumbed to the debilitating effects of Parkinsonís disease and passed away quietly.
