Soon after his birth the parents moved to Middle Fork township in which community he spent his entire life until April, 1919, when he came with his family to Mount Ayr. About seven weeks ago Mr. HOLDEN went to Rochester, Minn., to enter the Mayo Brothers' institution in the hope of improving his health, and there wil all the medical science and care that could be bestowed upon him, received his call home, his death resulting from a weakened condition of heart occasioned by a complication of troubles.

In January, 1885, the deceased was converted an united with the Methodist Episcopal church at the old Rose Hill appointment on the Redding charge, under the labors of the Rev. T. G. ATEN. Four years later he transferred his membership to Fry Chapel where he remained a member until his death.

On February 25th, 1890, he was united in marriage with Mary E. GLENDENNING, daughter of James W. and Delilah GLENDENNING, of Middle Fork township, and to this union was born one child, a daughter, Carrie Mabel, now Mrs. Rolla L. FRY. On December 28th, 1892, he was bereft of his companion. On April 11, 1894, he was again married, this time to Laura B. CARTER, daughter of Albert and Martha CARTER of New Hampton, Mo. To this union was born two children, a daughter, Etta Mae, now Mrs. Homer SMITH, and the son, William E. at home.

In occupation the deceased was a farmer. He received a common school education, and having been tempered by the hardships of the earlier days, mastered the situation and through a combination of energy and confidence forged ahead and built up a comfortable home, and contributed his full share to the good citizenship of the community.

For many years he had been a constant sufferer, having received an injury about eighteen years since that finally resulted in partial disability and retirement from his chosen occupation. But through all his affliction he manifest the true, heroic spirit, and to the last minute of his life and the courage to fight until nature could no longer withstand the strain.

In his home life he was kind and devoted; in relation to his brothers and sister, he exemplified the true spirit of generosity; as a neighbor he sought to live in accordance with the Golden Rule. Though life was cut short, yet he lived long in good deeds.

He leaves to mourn his early departure, his beloved wife, the two daughters and the son, his father John HOLDEN of Mount Ayr, three brothers, John C. of Liberty township and Joseph E. of Cedar Rapids, and one sister, Mrs. Robert W. ARMSTRONG of Lotts Creek township, also a cousin, Dr. Samuel BAILEY of Mount Ayr.
