The Mount Ayr Record-News, 1923

DEATH of D. F. HOFFMAN.

David F. HOFFMAN, for fifty years a resident of Middle Fork township and one of Ringgold county's most highly respected citizens, passed away at his home Thursday, September 20, aged seventy-four years, four months and fourteen days. Mr. HOFFMAN had been enjoying his usual health until a few hours before his death, when he suffered an attack of neuralgia which affected his heart and the end came suddenly. In the death of Mr. HOFFMAN the county loses one of its best citizens; a man who during all the years of his long residence in the county had by his rugged honesty and gentlemanly demeanor commanded the admiration and respect of the people of the community. He was known as a true christian gentleman and his influence was always found on the side of justice and right.

Mr. HOFFMAN was born in Tippecanoe county, Indiana, May 6, 1849. At an early age he came to Iowa, being among the pioneer settlers of the state. On March 21, 1872, he was united in marriage with Mary S. GRIFFITH. To this union were born five children, all of whom except one daughter, Nellie Bessie, who died at the tender age of three years, survive and with the wife and mother mourn his death. Soon after his marriage Mr. HOFFMAN established his home on the farm on which he lived until the day of his death.

In the nineties Mr. HOFFMAN served the county as a member of the board of supervisors and the service was marked by conscientious devotion to duty and painstaking effort in the management of the county's business.

The funeral, held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Middle Fork church, was largely attended. The service was conducted by Rev. C. W. PEER, of Redding, and Rev. Jay KIRKENDALL, of Mount Ayr. The interment was in Hickory Grove cemetery.

CARD OF THANKS.

We take this means of expressing to the neighbors and friends our sincere thanks for their many acts of kindness and expressions of sympathy on the occasion of the death and funeral of our husband and father.

MRS. D. F. HOFFMAN AND FAMILY

NOTE: David F. HOFFMAN was interred at Middle Fork Cemetery beside his wife Mary S. (GRIFFITH). Mary S. (GRIFFITH) HOFFMAN was born on February 21, 1856, and died February 24, 1947. Nellie Bessie HOFFMAN, daughter of David F. and Mary S. (GRIFFITH), was born on September 30, 1883, and died on January 3, 1887 with interment at Middle Fork Cemetery, Ringgold County, Iowa.
