Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
December 14, 1961

OBITUARY - DR. J. W. HILL

Dr. J. W. HILL was born July 20, 1882, in West Branch, Iowa, and passed away December 7, 1961, in the Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr, following a heart attack suffered the day previous. He was 79 years, four months and 17 days of age. His youth was spent in the West Branch community. He obtained his original education in medicine in St. Joseph, Mo., and had taken additional work in various institutions since that time.

In 1907, he began the practice of medicine in West Liberty and Cedar Rapids and after seven years in that area, moved to Ellston, which community he served for nine years. From Ellston, Dr. HILL came to Mount Ayr, where he had cared for his many patients during the past thirty-eight years.

Four years ago, the community honored Dr. Hill upon the completion of half century of devoted service.

On October 3, 1911, he was united in marriage with Flora PURSELL, of Iowa City, and this fall they had observed their fiftieth wedding anniversary in their home in Mount Ayr. They are the parents of three children - Mary (Mrs. John FREELAND), of Winter Haven, Florida, Ruth (Mrs. Lee LARSON), of Davenport, and Carlton, who was killed in a car accident in 1932.

Dr. HILL was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Faith Lodge No. 179, A.F. & A.M., and the Mount Ayr Businessmen's Club. He served as a member of the board of education of the Independent School District of Mount Ayr; county coroner; city health commissioner; secretary of the Ringgold County Dental Society for a period of forty years and as county chairman of the 1960-61 Heart Fund Drive. He was interested in the construction of the Ringgold County Hospital and from the time it was opened in 1951 until 1955, he served as chief of the hospital staff.

Those who remain to cherish his memory are his widow, Flora; two daughters - Mary and Ruth; five grandchildren - Philip and Susan FREELAND and Linda, Karen and Judy LARSON; a niece, Edith JENSEN, of West Liberty, and a host of friends and neighbors.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the United Presbyterian Church, conducted by Rev. John MOFFETT, of Creston. Mrs. Billie KELLEY and Mrs. Robert FISHER sang, accompanied by Mrs. W. B. CUNNING. Casketbearers were W. W. SALTZMAN, W. B. CUNNING, F. E. McNEILEY, Harold WEBB, Harold M. ROSS and George IRVING. Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery [Mount Ayr].
