OBITUARY - MARA LEA (SCOTT) HETHERINGTON
Mara Lea (SCOTT) HETHERINGTON, 83, of Grandview, MO, passed away peacefully in her sleep surrounded by family members
September 5, 2005 at Life Care Center of Grandview. A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m., Saturday September 17, at
Mission Road Community of Christ Church, 7842 Mission Road, Prairie Village, KS. At her request, Mara Lea's body has been
donated to Kansas University Medical Center in the interest of medical research.
Mara Lea was born April 7, 1922, in Kellerton, Iowa to parents Rothmer and Ruth (JOY) SCOTT. She graduated from Lamoni High
School in 1939 and attended Graceland College. Mara Lea married Willard "Scott" HETHERINGTON January 25, 1942 in Burlington,
After Scott's tour of duty in the U.S. Navy following WWII, he and Mara Lea moved to Lamoni, IA. They were
associated with Mara Lea's father and brother, Edward, in the Coffee Shoppe from 1945 to 1960. From 1972 to 1981, their
family owned and operated the Wagon Wheel Restaurant in Lamoni.
Mara Lea was baptized into the Reorganized Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1935. From 1960 to 1970 the HETHERINGTON family lived in Florida. During that time
church services were held in their home, gradually enlarging to the Gainesville and Ocala congregations.
Mara Lea loved playing bridge, visiting with her family, reading mystery novels, watching TV, and eating hot fudge sundaes
without the nuts.
Mara Lea was preceded in death by her husband Scott (1988), father Rothmer (1955), stepfather, Archie
REW (1991), mother Ruth (1983), and brothers Edward (1976), John (1942), and Paul (1939). She is survived by son John
HETHERINGTON (Patricia) of Rogersville, MO, son James HETHERINGTON (Janelle) of Cottage Grove, OR, daughter Joy PEARSON
(Lamar) of Grandview, MO; 13 grandchildren: Scott HETHERINGTON (Lubna) Farmington Hills, MI, David, Laura, Jonathan, Steve,
and James HETHERINGTON of Cottage Grove, OR, Kara and Tara HETHERINGTON of Springfield, MO, Dyane ANDERSON (Chad) of
Springfield, MO, Heidi HICKAM (Jeremy) of Belton, MO, Haley HANCOCK (Steve) of Belton, MO, Kristanne MORGAN (Tim)
Independence, MO, and Hether PILLMAN (Adam) of Fairway, KS; 16 great-grandchildren: Madelynn HETHERINGTON of Farmington
Hills, MI, Anthony HETHERINGTON of Springfield, MO, Kiera PARROW of Springfield, MO, Nathan and Eric ANDERSON of
Springfield, MO, Dakota, Kaci, and Kaleb HICKAM of Belton, MO, Kamisha, Steve, and Kaley HANCOCK of Belton, MO, Alexis and
Melody MORGAN of Independence, MO, Jacob, Geoffrey, and Joshua PILLMAN of Fairway, KS, and Kendra BROWN of San Jose, CA;
other relatives and friends; and her two beloved cats, KoKo and Yum Yum.
Mara Lea will be greatly missed. She was a loving wife, mother, nana, and Big Nanny.
