The Mount Ayr Record-News, 1927

OBITUARY - MRS. MARY HEDGE.

Mary Jane BLACK, oldest daughter of Valentine and Nancy BLACK, was born in Harrison county, Mo., August 10, 1851, and departed this life at her home in Riley township, Ringgold county, February 10, 1927, at the age of 75 years and 6 months. She grew to womanhood in Harrison county and on October 27, 1870 she was united in marriage to Millard F. HEDGE. To this union three children were born, the oldest dying in infancy. A son, Oscar, and a daughter Louisa, were sent to gladden the hearts of this young couple. In the fall of 1876 they moved to their present home in Ringgold county where they have since resided. She, with her family, have spent a full half century in this home, where the little acorn sending its tiny sprout up through the virgin soil has grown to a mighty tree. At the age of thirteen she gave her heart to God and united with the Presbyterian church to which she has retained her membership through life. She was a loving mother and a faithful companion in the making of the home life. She leaves to mourn her death, her companion, Willard (sic) HEDGE, daughter, Mrs. Louisa DAVIS, son, Mr. Oscar HEDGE, all of Riley township, also two sisters and one brother, together with a number of neighbors and friends. Funeral services were held at the home at eleven o'clock, February 11th, and the body laid to rest in the Lamoni [Rose Hill] cemetery [Decatur County, Iowa].
