MRS. WM. HAYS RITES HELD IN CLEARFIELD
Last rites for Mrs. William HAYS of Bedford, who died in Clearfield, Sunday, May 28, were held in Clearfield,
the following Wednesday, at the Varner-Crew Funeral Home. Burial was in Fairview cemetery at Bedford.
Evalene GRACE was born November 16, 1871, at Monmouth, Ill., the eldest daughter of Jesse and Jane GRACE. She
moved as a child with her family by oxen and covered wagon to Iowa, residing on a farm in Jackson Township,
Taylor County. There she grew to womanhood and on February 17, 1897, was united in marriage to William HAYS.
To this union were born five children: Verla, now Mrs. Frank ECKLIN of Lenox; Sheila, Mrs. Herman WURSTER of
Clearfield; Argyl HAYS of Afton; Berthel, Mrs. Nelson LEDGERWOOD of Bedford; Virgil HAYS of Diagonal.
She lived her entire married life in Taylor County. She was a member of the Christian church in Bedford,
active in church work until stricken with a stroke 12 years ago, since which she had been an invalid.
Surviving with her husband and the five children are 20 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren. Also one
brother, Clark GRACE of Bedford. Three sisters, one brother and one grandson preceded her in death.
