Mount Ayr Record-News, 1928

OBITUARY - GEORGE W. HARDEN.

George W., son of Jesse and Julia HARDEN, was born February 13, 1864, in the state of Maryland and departed this life at the Mercy hospital at Des Moines May 29, 1928, age 64 years, four months and 16 days. His youth was spent in Pittsburgh, Pa., and in Stubenville, O., where he lived with his orphaned brothers and sisters. He came to Ringgold county in 1888 and made his home in this county until his death.

He was married to Arthelia M. CLEWELL January 10, 1889. To this union four sons and four daughters were born - Grace McCLELLAND, of Florence, Kan.; Mildred HARSH, of Borger, Texas; Ferne McCLELLAND, of Dunnegan, Mo.; Perry M., of Wilcox, Mo.; Alice HUDSON, of Mount Ayr and Clyde E., of Columbus, O. One son died in infancy. Their married life was spent on a farm until their children were grown. In 1920 they retired to Mount Ayr and for the past eight years he acted as mail messenger.

He was of a quiet, unassuming nature and a great lover of his home and family. His wife and children were everything to him, and no task too hard or sacrifice too great, if it was for them. He was always honest and conscientious in all his dealings and had made a great host of friends in and around Mount Ayr. His health had slowly failed during the past year and a little more than a month ago he gave up the work of carrying the mail. For four weeks he had been bedfast, and six days before his death was taken to the Mercy hospital that he might have the advantage of treatment there. During his last illness he made known his desire to be on God's side and was converted and baptized. The end came peacefully.

Besides his devoted wife and children he leaves to mourn his death ten grandsons and five granddaughters, three sisters and one brother, all of Ohio.

Card of Thanks.

We take this means of expressing our appreciation to our kindneighbors and friends for the many acts and words of kindness and sympathy that helped us bear the loss of our dear husband and father.--Mrs. Arthelia M. HARDEN and Children.

NOTE: Arthelia M. (CLEWELL), wife of George W. HARDEN, was born in 1866, and died in 1960 with interment beside her husband at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa.
