OBITUARY - RICHARD DEAN HAMMOND

Richard Dean HAMMOND was born at home south of Diagonal on December 16, 1926, the son of Foster & Mary Martha (NOVAK) HAMMOND. Richard would later welcome a younger sister Phyllis Anne. Richard graduated from Diagonal High School in 1945. On February 12, 1949, he was united in marriage to Martha Alice BLADON at the First Christian Church in Creston. After several years of farming Richard became a custodian and bus driver for the Diagonal Community School District. He worked 16 years as a patrol driver for Ringgold County Highway Department. He lived his entire life in Diagonal where he was a member of the Lions Club; charter member of the Rural Development Diagonal Housing Unit; Fogle Lake Development; and was a member of the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Posse.

Richard passed away on July 27, 2008. He was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law Vernon "Slim" & Vera BLADON; and a brother-in-law Doyle BLADON.

Survivors include his loving wife of 59 years, Martha HAMMOND, of Diagonal; two children Dick HAMMOND and Diana TURNER & husband Curt, all of Creston, IA; six grandchildren, Tiffini (Jason) KNIGHT of Nashport, OH; Ryan (Yanxin) HAMMOND of Sammamish, WA; Atisha (Jason) BRUCE of Creston; Callie (Mike) BRUCE of Creston; Katie (Brian) STRIDER of Creston; and Travis (Emily) TURNER of Creston; eight great-grandchildren Brooklyn KNIGHT, Abbie BRUCE, Evan & Caitlin BRUCE, Cole & Kyle STRIDER, Cael & Ella TURNER; his sister Phyllis Anne (Bill) ANDREWS of Diagonal; sister-in-law Helen BLADON of Bella Vista, AR; two brothers-in-law LaVern (Rene) BLADON of Bella Vista, AR, and Frank (Ginger) BLADON of Clearwater, FL; uncle Joseph Vince BISHOP of Port Jervis, NY; aunt Doris GREEN of Creston; a host of nephews, nieces and friends.

Memorials are to the Marlin Fogle Recreation Area.

[Interment was made at Diagonal Cemetery, Diagonal, Iowa.
