OBITUARY - S. S. HALL.
Samuel Stewart HALL, son of Thomas Milton and Mary Ann HALL, was born near Benton, Ringgold county, Iowa, December 26, 1857,
and departed this life Thursday, October 29, 1931, at the age of 73 years, 10 months and three days. He was married to Sarah Jane
HUTCHISON February 23, 1879. To this union were born ten children, the oldest, John Thomas, dying in infancy. He is survived by
his widow and the following children: Etta May CROSS, Charles Newton, Cora Margaret LAND and Samuel Glenn of Benton; James
Stewart and Rebecca Ann BUMGARMER of Hatfield, Mo.; Mary Evaline MAKEY of Clearfield; Fredric McKandra of Davis City, and Albert
Milton of Mount Ayr, Iowa; also 19 grandchildren and two great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Theodocia MORRILL of Greeley, Colo.,
and two half sisters, Mrs. Jessie CABARET of Mount Ayr and Mrs. Dicy BYERLY of Benton, a large number of nieces and nephews and a
host of friends.
Mr. HALL was of pioneer stock and died within two miles of the place of his birth. He watched Ringgold
county grow from a prairie country to a well improved and progressive farm community. He was industrious and had acquired a splendid
farm and home where he lived a contented life. Here is where he died surrounded by his family after a brief illness of one week
caused by a stroke of paralysis.
Mr. HALL was a progressive citizen, always standing for the best things for the people. It
was through his efforts and judgment that the fine new school house was built in Benton, a monument to his memory. He was for many
years elected to various offices of trust and was always courageous and honest in his convictions in dealing with his fellow men.
He was in an early day an active member of the Methodist church but later spent his time more at home, but was a firm believer to the
end in the Bible and its teachings. He was a charter member of the Ringgold lodge No. 570, I. O. O. F., in all its branches. He was
an enthusiastic worker for yeras when his health would permit, and was honored by being sent to the Grand Lodge of Iowa for several
terms as representative.
The family has lost a loving husband and father and the community a good citizen. Peace to his memory.
The funeral was held Saturday, October 31, at the Methodist church in Benton, conducted by Brother T. S. RHOADES, assisted by
Brother J. D. DILLE. The Odd Fellows took part in their regular funeral ceremony and body was laid to rest in the Benton cemetery.
Card of Thanks.
We take this means of expressing to the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs and to the neighbors and
friends our sincere and heart-felt thanks for their kindness and sympathy; also for the beautiful flowers given on the occasion of the
death and funeral of our husband and father. - Mrs. S. S. HALL AND CHILDREN.
