Irene was born in Redding, IA and lived much of her early life in St. Joseph, MO. After college in Missouri, marrying Wendell HAWTHORNE, and attending Cornell in Ithica, NY, she lived in Kansas before moving in 1944 to Wenonah.

Irene was a loving homemaker who was active in the Methodist Church, singing in the choir. Music was always an important part of her life. She was a very proficient seamstress, often making clothing for the family.

After her marriage of 35 years to Dr. HAWTHORNE ended, she moved to Southold, Long Island where she married Dudley HAGERMAN in 1965.

She also helped out at a fabric shop where she often helped customers figure out how to follow patterns and crochet or do needlework. She did a lot of needlework and crewel work and then turned to counted-cross-stitch. She was an avid crossword puzzler and also enjoyed complex puzzles and reading.

After 20 years of happy marriage, Dudley died in 1985.

She continued actively working in her church, enjoying visits from family and friends. In 2005 she moved to the Pitman Manor, where she continued to read many books and do crossword puzzles. She continued to enjoy visits from family and friends.

Memorial services and interment will be private at the convenience of the family in Southold, NY.
