OBITUARY ~ VIRGIL LEWIS FOSTER
January 18, 1923 ~ January 11, 2008
Virgil Lewis FOSTER was born in Kellerton, Iowa, on January 18, 1923, the son of Ira William FOSTER and Rebecca
Elizabeth (MARRS) FOSTER. He departed this life at Boswell Hospital in Sun City, Arizona, on January 11, 2008,
at the age of 84 years, 11 months and 24 days.
Virgil attended school in Kellerton and worked on area farms
during the Depression to help out the family. He was inducted into the U.S. Army in February 1943 at Camp Dodge,
IA. In September 1944, Virgil departed on the Queen Mary to Scotland and onto New Castle, England. In
England he joined up with C Company, 318th Infantry, 80th Division under General Patton. Combat started on New
Year's Eve 1944 at Omaha Bach. On January 27, 1945, Virgil was wounded outside of Luxembourg. He was hospitalized
in France and England before returning to the u.S. on the George Washington Hospital Ship. A memory for
Virgil was when the hospital staff took him up on deck to greet the Statue of Liberty. Virgil spent 11 months in
Fitzsimmons Hospital, Denver, CO. Virgil received an honorable discharge in November 1945. Virgil was an expert
rifleman and a decorated heor with a Combat Infantry Badge, Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and other medals.
married Grace Arlene JACKSON on May 26, 1946. To this marriage one son was born, Dana Lewis FOSTER. He then married
Cheryl Winona Bressler MOORE on May 27, 1967. Virgil worked 23 years with the Des Moines Transit Company before
moving to Prescott, AZ in 1969. Virgil worked for the Yavapi County road maintenance until he received full
disability for his service-related injuries.
Virgil enjoyed many hobbies including bowling, playing cards,
collecting, fishing, panning for gold, watching sports, photography, and going to estate sales.

Virgil is survived by his wife, Cheryl, of Sun City, AZ; son, Dana (Marlys), of Ankeny, IA;
twin sister, Virginia Lee FOSTER JOHNSTON of Des Moines, IA; brother, Ira (Mary) FOSTER of Smithsville, TX;
two sisters-in-law, Erma FOSTER of Big Falls, MN, and Sara FOSTER of Ankeny, IA; step-daughter, Carole (MOORE)
JENSEN, of Glendale, AZ; step-son, Bill MOORE, of Mason City, IA; two grandchildren, Daniel Lewis FOSTER (Amy)
of Litchfield Park, AZ, and Rebecca Fay (FOSTER) TANK (JOHN) of Des Moines, IA; seven step-grandchildren, Christine
JENSEN, Daniel JENSEN, David MOORE, Scott MOORE, Holly MOORE RICH, Michael MOORE, and Kelli MOORE NOVESHEN; five
great-grandchildren, Johnathan Joseph TANK,Natalie Faye TANK, Daniel Anthony TANK, Zacharey Lewis FOSTER, and Zoie
Grace FOSTER; six step-great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and a host of family friends.
