OBITUARY ~ HERMAN FENNEMA
Herman FENNEMA, son of Chester and Jennie KALDENBERG FENNEMA, was born February 11, 1904 in Monroe, Iowa, and passed
away at the Clearview Nursing Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa on April 8, 1987.
He graduated from the Monroe High School and
majored in agricultural education at Iowa State University. He was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. Following
his college education, he served as high school principal, instructor in agriculture and athletic coast in the high
schools of Richland and Macksburg, Iowa.
On August 10, 1935, he was united in marriage to Helen BENSON. Born to
this union was one daughter, Marcia Kaye.
Mr. FENNEMA was appointed supervisor for the Farmers Home Administration
in 1936, serving in that organization for 10 years. In 1945 the family moved to Mount Ayr, where he opened a John
Deere agancy, which he owned and operated for 27 years. In 1960, he was appointed a field man for the Agricultural
Stabilization and Conservation Service. He served the southwest part of the state in this capacity until he was appointed
to the state ASCS committee in 1967.
Herman was always active in community affairs in Mount Ayr. He served on
various bords and commissions of the United Methodist Church, of which he was a member; worked two terms on the city
council; served as director of the Mount Ayr Community School district; was a member of the Ringgold County Selective
Board; and served for many years an an officer on the board of Mount Ayr Manor, Inc.
Throughout his life he always
maintained a great interest in sports. He received state recognition for his abilities in high school basketball
competition. He was a member of the Iowa State University basketball team from 1947 to 1955. Herman was noted for his
straightforward, energetic approach to all problems, and for fairness in his dealings. He evidenced a constant concern for
the underprivileged, and was generous with his time, energy, and God-given resources in serving his family and
Survivors include: his wife, Helen; daughter and son-in-law, Marcia and Peter DEVEREAUX, of Richamond,
Virginia, and grandchildren, Moira and Matthew DEVEREAUX; a brother, Carl FENNEMA, of Monroe, Iowa; a sister,
Mrs. Ray VANDERWAAL, of Phoenix, Arizona; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Ervin STAPELMAN of Belden, Nebraska, and a
brother-in-law and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Ellsworth BENSON, of Lincoln, Nebraska.
Funeral services were held April 10,
1987 from the United Methodist church in Mount Ayr, Iowa, conducted by Rev. Ed KAIL. Music was provided by Mrs.
Merrill PERRY and Dr. Collus LAWHEAD.
Casketbearers were Jim JOBE, Glenn KING, Jay MONDAY, Dan CUNNING, Arlen HUGHES
and Randy McDONNELL. Honorary pallbearers were Elmo ROE, Jack ELLIOTT, Harold FOLTZ, Frank CLARKE, Ivan HARTMAN, J. N.
CHICKEN, Earl SCHARDEIN and Bernard SOBOTKA. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery at Mount Ayr, Iowa.
