OBITUARY ~ CHARLES H. ENNIS

Charles H. Ennis, one of Clearfield's early settlers, died Sunday, April 17, at the home of his son, Dr. Harry H. Ennis, in Baxter, Iowa, at the age of 87 years, 4 months, and 16 days. He was born in East Machias, Maine, and in early manhood came west to Illinois, coming shortly after to southern Iowa, where for twenty-five years he was engaged in business in Clearfield and other points. He was in the lumber business here, also in the clothing business later. He was married to Miss Carrie Allen in 1876 and their married life was spent in Clearfield, Mrs. Ennis passing away in 1888. He was the father of four children, his two sons, Harry of Baxter, Iowa, and Lee of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and two grandchildren being left to mourn his loss. Mr. Ennis kept his faculties of body and mind to a remarkable degree until a short time before his death, and had a keen interest in the events of the day. He resided in Rome, Iowa, the last six years of his life, being taken to his sonís home in Baxter a little over two weeks before his death. He was a member of the First Baptist church of Rome, and for sixty-six years was a member of the Masonic order. Funeral services were conducted at the home of Dr. Ennis on Wednesday afternoon, at 2:30, Rev. Norstrom of the Community Congregational church officiating, and Mr. Chas. Davis having charge of the Masonic rites there. On Thursday the body was brought to Clearfield for burial and was accompanied by Dr. and Mrs. Harry Ennis and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Ennis and daughter, and a body of Masonic brethren, the Clearfield Masonic order having charge of the Masonic services at the cemetery.

Mr. Ennis also had one son by his second wife, Elwood Ennis, of Essex, Iowa who with wife and daughter also survive him.
