OBITUARY ~ LIZZIE MERLE (HICKMAN) EMIG

Lizzie Hickman Emig, daughter of Albert and Nettie Hickman, was born July 10, 1891, near Kellerton, and departed this life May 19, 1966, in the Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr at the age of 74 years, 10 months and nine days. On December 31, 1913, in Leon, she was united in marriage with Charles Emig, and of this union were born four children - Harold, of Marion, Grace (Mrs. Lawrence Combs), of Kellerton, Gerald of Conway, and Wayne of Lamoni. By a former marriage were born a daughter, Winnie (Mrs. Russell Laird), of Creston, and a son, who died in infancy. The husband and father passed away on July 29, 1938.

In her youth, Mrs. Emig became a member of the Tuskeego Baptist Church. Later, she placed her membership with the Christian Church in Kellerton. She was faithful in attendance at Sunday school and worship services and active in the work of the church as long as health permitted.

She was born, reared and spent her entire life on the same Decatur county farm. When her health failed and she could no longer live alone, she entered the Clearview Home in Mount Ayr. On September 19, 1965, she suffered a stroke of paralysis and was taken to the Ringgold County Hospital, where she was cared for until God called her home.

She was never happier than when someone needed her help. She loved her children and grandchildren and her family was her pride and joy. While living alone for so many years she was brave and tried not to be a burden to anyone.

She was preceded in death by her husband; an infant son; one grandson and a brother, Carl.

Those who remain to cherish her memory are five children; 20 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren, and a brother, Ronald Hickman, of Lamoni.

Funeral services were held May 22, from the Kellerton Christian Church, conducted by Mrs. Cela Fugate. Allen Hughes sang "In The Garden" and "Beyond the Sunset," accompanied by Mrs. Weldon Meadows, organist. Casket bearers were Richard O'Dell, Ronald Smith, James Payton, Burbin Padgitt, Gerald Laird and Porter Havely. In charge of the flowers were the Mesdames Stella O'Dell, Bernice O'Dell, Pearl Leonard and Lois Smith. Interment was in the Maple Row Cemetery at Kellerton.
