H. B. [Horace Bunk] ELLIS was a man who lived a long and full life - all of it in Ringgold county, in and around Mount Ayr. He was born in Poe township of August 12, and died Saturday evening, June 28, 1980 at the Ringgold County hospital where he had been confined for a short time. He was one of seven children of John T. and Elizabeth ELLIS.

After attending Mount Ayr schools, he served in the United States Army during World War I. This tour of duty was the only time he didn't reside in Ringgold County. For over 40 years he was employed by Hawkeye Lumber Company and retired from duty there in 1958.

After he and the former Wilma KELLY were married on Nov. 8, 1931 in Kansas City, Mo. The couple was to have 48 years together. Though he had no children of his own, Mr. ELLIS befriended and enjoyed children of others.

His parents, three brothers and three sisters all preceded him in death. The brothers were Perry, Harry and Fred ELLIS, and the sisters were Ida and Pearl ELLIS and Mamie WHEELER.

He is survived by his wife; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Harry ELLIS of Ottumwa; nieces and nephews; and the many friends he made during his working at the lumberyard, as a volunteers fireman and through his membership in the Mount Ayr American Legion Post.

He was a longtime member and for over 30 years was secretary of the Mount Ayr Volunteer Firemen's organization. He was a charter member of the Ringgold Post No. 172, American Legion.

Since his retirement from employment and service as a fireman, H. G. ELLIS has devoted his time to enjoying his home and his wife, who meant much to him.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 30, at Rhoades-Wilson Funeral Home, conducted by Pastor Milt HENDERSON.

Music was provided by organist Mrs. Robert THOMAS. Casketbearers were Ralph LONG, William RUSK, Everett REYNOLDS, Harold BOWER, Max ANDERSON and Harold GOLLIDAY. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Mount Ayr.
