OBITUARY - L. W. "Joe" GROSS

L. W. "Joe" GROSS, 78, of Mount Ayr died Aug. 2, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Services are pending at Wilson-Watson and Armstrong Funeral Home, 205 W. Monroe St., Mount Ayr.

American Flag.jpg L. W. "Joe" GROSS, 78, of Mount Ayr died August 2, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 6, at the United Methodist Church in Mount Ayr. The Rev. Susan THOMAS will officiate the service. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery at Mount Ayr. Open visitation will be after noon Thursday with 6:30 p.m. Masonic service and family visitation at Wilson-Watson and Armstrong Funeral Home, 205 W. Monroe St., Mount Ayr. A memorial has been established in his name.

Mr. GROSS, son of Opal (HORNEY) and Lester O. GROSS, was born October 27, 1925, in Fort Morgan, Colo. On July 20, 1945, he married Helen HAMMANS in Arispe. He worked for the Iowa State Patrol 16 1/2 years, was an insurance agent and administrator/owner of the Mount Ayr Health Care Center, retiring May 1, 1989. He served in the Iowa House of Representatives in 1981-82 and served on the Republican State Central Committee from the 5th and 3rd Congressional Districts 18 years. He served two terms on the Mount Ayr City Council and Ringgold County Hospital Board of Trustees.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Faith Lodge No. 179 AF&AM, Order of Eastern Star and American Legion Post No. 172, all in Mount Ayr; Veterans of Foreign Wars, Des Moines Consistory, Za-Ga-Zig Shrine and past president of South Central Shrine Club. He served 14 years on the Iowa Health Association Board of Directors and three terms on Iowa State Board of Health. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to March 16, 1946.

Survivors include his wife, Helen GROSS of Mount Ayr; a daughter, Joen (husband Larry) BROWN of Mount Ayr; a son, Jack (wife Marlene) GROSS of Des Moines; a son-in-law, Joe (wife Jennifer) RIVERA of Boone; a brother, Richard (wife Betty) GROSS of Diagonal; an uncle, Sidney (wife Catherine) GROSS of Osceola; grandchildren, Dustin BROWN, T. J. BROWN, Melanie GROSS, Jason (wife Athamandia) GROSS and Joey RIVERA; and a great-granddaughter, Lucy Jayne GROSS.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Jayne Ann RIVERA August 29, 1990; and a brother and sister-in-law, Arlyn and Maxine GROSS.

The Honorable L. W. Joe GROSS, of Ringgold County, Iowa,
who was a member of the Sixty-ninth, Sixty-ninth Extra, and Sixty-ninth Second Extra
general assemblies,
passed away August 2, 2004:
Now Therefore, Be It Resolved By The House of Representatives,
That a committee of three be appointed by the Speaker of the House
to prepare suitable resolutions commemorating
his life, character, and service to the state.
The motion prevailed and the Speaker appointed as such committee:
DOLECHECK of Ringgold, REASONER of Union, and ANDERSON of Page [counties].
