JOHN ALLEN GRAVETT - Obituary

John Allen Gravett, son of Melvin and Polly Gravett, was born in 1881, near Clay City, Ky., and departed from this life June 1, 1956, in the Ringgold County Hospital at Mount Ayr. He was one of a family of eleven children, of whom nine survive.

He moved in 1910 to southwest Iowa and farmed in that vicinity until ill health caused his retirement in 1951, after which he located in Mount Ayr. He was united in marriage with Abigal Mae Pettis on July 4, 1931.

In his youth Mr. Gravett, united with the Christian church and for a number of years served as a deacon. He was a loving husband and father and respected by all with whom he was acquainted.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Ruth Elaine; a son, Evan Cewell, and a sister, Mallie Wells.

Left to cherish his memory are his widow, Abigal Mae; two daughters, Deloris Mae, of the home, and Mrs. Clinton Fazel, of Santa Monica, Calif.; a son, James Melvin, of Los Angeles, Calif.; two granddaughters, Mary Lynne and Kathy Fazel; five sisters, Mary Barnett, of Winchester, Ky., Nanny Bush, of Irving Ky., Kittie Wright, of Georgetown Ky., Ida Burger, of Clay City, Ky., and Fanny Shimfessel, of Lexington, Ky., and four brothers, George, of Vaughns Mill, Ky., Mack, of Sterling, Ky., Ernest, of Miamisburg, Ohio, and Clarence, of Danvers, Ill.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the Prugh-Dunfee Chapel in Mount Ayr, conducted by the Rev. Harold A. Reel, pastor of the First Christian Church. Burial was at Grant City, Mo.
