OBITUARY- LEROY CLIFFORD GILES

LeRoy Clifford GILES, United States Navy veteran, 73, of Tingley, Iowa, fought his final battle against lymphoma and went home to be with God on March 2, 2010.

LeRoy began an honorable career proudly serving his country in the United States Navy when he enlisted on February 12, 1956. LeRoy first served on the U.S.S. Intrepid (CVA-11), which he later visited on her birthday in New York, and went on to serve aboard eight other naval ships. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and fought many years against the harsh effects of Agent Orange. After his naval career, he went on to serve his community working in law enforcement. LeRoy was a true patriot; red, white, and blue to the core. He was an avid collector and especially enjoyed collecting eagles, American flags and other patriotic memorabilia. LeRoy proudly displayed many commendations and honors from his military service throughout his home.

LeRoy was a man of faith and answered only to the judgment of his Lord, Jesus Christ. In his final days, LeRoy enjoyed visiting with his family and was proud to have five generations together. His companion, Rose, cared for him in his final months and his grandson, David, was by his side throughout his final days.

LeRoy is survived by his mother, Nova; sisters, Doris Jean and Darlene; four sons, Timothy, Thomas, Terry and Theodore; 16 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

LeRoy is predeceased by his father, Floyd.

LeRoy will be honored with a naval burial at sea. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the "Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum": Office of Institutional Advancement, Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, One Intrepid Square, West 46th Street and 12th Avenue, New York, NY 10036.

LeRoy will be missed greatly but his legacy will carry on in his family for generations to come. His memory lives on in the words he always wrote: "Take care, be safe and always try to be brave no matter what. Just later."
