OBITUARY - EARL WILLIAM FUGATE, 83
JANESVILLE, Wis. - Earl William FUGATE, 83, of Janesville, Wis., died Tuesday, April 13, 2010, at Rock Haven Nursing
Home. He was born in Ellston, IA on Sept. 1, 1926, the oldest of 18 children of Gertrude (O'BRYAN) FUGATE and William
Walter FUGATE. He grew up in southern Iowa and graduated from Davis City High School in 1943. He enlisted in the U. S.
Navy in 1944 and served in the South Pacific. He returned to attend the University of Idaho and participated in the Navy
ROTC program. He married Faye BRENNEMAN on Jan. 26, 1947, in Webster City, IA.
He attended Loras College in Dubuque, IA and graduated in 1949. He worked for Burroughs Adding Machine Company in
Milwaukee for 2 years. In 1952, he joined the Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance Company and moved to Janesville. He was
the first salesman from the Milwaukee agency to achieve a life membership in the Million Dollar Round Table. His
interest in aviation prompted him to complete the highest ratings attainable for pilots, including multi-engine and
airline transport ratings. In 1966, he started Janesville based Midwest Aviation, a freight airline company that grew
to employ 29 licensed pilots. In 1970, he returned to college to earn his MBA degree from the University of Wisconsin,
Whitewater. He was a professor at the University of Madison and Whitewater until his retirement. In later years, he was
a consultant for Citibank in Chicago and Miami Beach, FL. He was a charter member of the Serra Club. He was also a
longtime member of St. William Catholic Church and the Janesville Kiwanis Club.
Earl is survived by his wife of 63 years, Faye FUGATE of Janesville; 7 children: Stephen of Portland, OR, Dennis (Janet)
of Janesville, Thomas of Milton, Faye Suzanne of Beloit, Sandra (Mike) NORTHEY of Rome, WI, Richard (Darcy) of Janesville,
and John (Vicki) of Janesville; 17 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 5 brothers and 6 sisters. He is preceded in
death by his parents; and 4 children: Kathryn, Douglas, and infants, Mary Beth and Martha; 3 brothers; and 3 sisters.
A Memorial Mass was celebrated at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 16, 2010, at St. William Catholic Church, Janesville, with Rev.
Randy TIMMERMAN officiating. Entombment followed at Mt. Olivet Mausoleum. Lasting Memorials may be made to St. William
Catholic Church. Schneider Apfel Schneider & Schneider Funeral Home, Janesville is assisting the family.
Earl will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother and role model.
He leaves behind a legacy of achievement, and a strong, large family.
His sense of humor and storytelling will never be forgotten.
