OBITUARY ~ MILDRED ELIZABETH "MILLY" COMBS EIGHMY
Mildred Elizabeth EIGHMY, the youngest of five children, died Friday, May 23, 2008, at Ringgold County Hospital in
Mount Ayr, Iowa.
Milly was born August 30, 1919 in Mount Ayr, Iowa to Lwarence and Dora JONES COMBS. She attended
school in Mount Ayr and graduated from high school in 1936.
Milly always enjoyed telling the story of her engagement
and marriage. She and Melvis EIGHMY were skating at the Mount Ayr skating rink at the time of the out break of World
War II. He had just proposed when the announcement of the war was made and she asked him what they would do. Melvis'
reply was, "Well, I guess we'll just keep on skating."
Milly and Melvis were married on February 8, 1942 in Savannah,
Born to this unions were four children, Meredith, Mike, Mark and Malcolm.
After Milly and Melvis were
married, they lived in Grant City, Missouri, Emporia, Kansas and moved to Mount Ayr in 1964. For most of her life, Milly
was a homemaker. She also held various office jobs in Grant City, Missouri and in Mount Ayr.
She was a member of the First
Christian Church in Mount Ayr and was active in Bible study, prayer groups and all activities of the church. Milly
was also a member of Eastern Star, Past Matrons, Literature Club, Quilt Club, Legion Auxiliary and Dorcas Society. Of
special enjoyment to Milly was the time she and Melvis spent traveling and camping with many wonderful friends throughout
the United States. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren also brought her much joy. Perhaps Milly's favorite
hobby was making quilts and she left many beautiful heirlooms for her family to treasure.
Left to cherish her memory
are her sons, Mike and wife Connie of Fairfax, Missouri, Mark and wife Carol of Riverside, Iowa, and Malcolm and
wife Ginny of Mount Ayr, Iowa; six grandchildren, Nathan and Sunny EIGHMY, Piper, Saylor, Zoey and Fynn of Pella, Iowa,
Brandon and Veronica EIGHMY, Lincoln and Harrison of Osceola, Iowa, Nick and Sara EIGHMY of Liberty, Missouri, Melissa
(EIGHMY) and Eric FRIEDRICH of Winterset, Iowa, Carly (EIGHMY) and Jon WEST of Memphis, Tennessee and Dustin EIGHMY
of Decatur City, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Mardelle TURNER, Betty SHIPLEY, Bonnie and George SCHUMACHER and Theresa and
Warren COMBS and cousins, nieces, nephes and friends.
Preceding her in death were her parents; a daughter, Meredith;
two brothers, Arnold and Dennis, and two sisters, Madge and Lois.
Funeral services were held at the First Christian
Church in Mount Ayr on Wednesday, May 28, 2008. Officiating were Pastor Karen MOORE and Rev. Mike EIGHMY. Music wa
provided by Collus LAWHEAD and Nancy SACKETT. Pallbearers were Milly's six grandchildren. Interment was in the Grant
City Cemetery in Grant City, Missouri. Arrangements were handled through Wilson-Watson & Armtrong Funeral Home.
Memorials may be directed to First Christian Church and Univeristy of Iowa Center for Muscular Degeneration.
