OBITUARY ~ NICHOLAS DUROS

Nicholas Duros, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tony Duros, was born January 18, 1920, at Iowa City, Iowa, and departed this life Friday, March 7, 1986.

He joined the National Guard after finishing high school. He then enlisted in the cavalry during World War II, serving several years in the European Theater. He took training in Fort Riley, Kansas. Later the cavalry was mobilized and he was placed in Communication. This led to his love of amateur radio, and he spent an hour or two each day sending code all over the United States and even to foreign countries, as code is tthe same in any language.

In 1946, Nick was united in marriage with Evelynne Hood, and to this union one son was born.

Nick was in the grocery business seventeen years, owned and operated the skating rink for several years while working at the Aryliner in the meat department for ten years. He finished his working years by managing the Clinton Motel for five years.

One of his pastimes was playing golf with "the thundering herd", as well as being a fan of many sports and playing cards with his friends.

Nick was a kind and loving father, husband, and grandfather who will be greatly missed by his wife, by his son Steven and daughter-in-law, Cynthia, and granddaughter Mary Renate; by his mother, Arie Duros of Iowa City; a brother Andrew, of Albuquerque, New Mexico; another brother Spero and his wife Ann, of Fort Worth, Texas; by a sister, Mary Warfield and her husband Robert of Gig Harbor, Washington; and by many nieces and nephews, along with friends.

Nick was baptized early in both the Greek Orthodox church, and the Methodist church. His father, Tony, preceded him in death in 1944.

Services were held March 9, 1986 at the Wilson-Watson Funeral Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa, conducted by Rev. Ed Kail, pastor of the Mount Ayr United Methodist Church. Music was provided by Mrs. Robert Homas and Arlen Hughes. Military rites were conducted at graveside by the Mount Ayr American Legion.

Casketbearers were Keith Cole, Calvin Adams, Melvin Adams, John McFarland, Bob Erickson and Gene Motsinger. Interment was in the Rose Hill cemetery at Mount Ayr.
