OBITUARY ~ DELLA (JENNINGS) CULVER

Della JENNINGS was born in Bobell, North Dakota on September 28, 1907 to Etta Mae (HAMMER) and Robert Lee JENNINGS. Della had eight brothers and sisters: Ernest, Luella, Leota CRAIG, Earl, Carl, Grace BENTLEY, Eva WOODS and Nate (N.H.).

On December 19, 1923, Della married Evan Grant CULVER. They lived all of their married life in the Blockton and Maloy, Iowa area. Evan and Della had five children: Clarence Evan, Richard Ernest, twins David Lee and Mae Marie (SHELDON), and Pattie Jean (FOLTZ). Evan passed away in 1963.

Della was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, mother-in-law, aunt, neighbor and friend. Della was a hard worker and always the first to volunteer her help.

She touched the lives of so many. Everyone will remember her homemade bread, noodles, doughnuts, pie and Christmas candy, as well as her boiled apple dumplings, caramel apples at Halloween and big holiday dinners. When we wrap up in one of the many afghans she knitted or warm our feet in a pair of her knitted slippers or our hands in a pair of her handmade mittens, we will know we are loved. Della always had a large garden and did a lot of canning. Her special ketchup recipe was a favorite.

Della always had time for children whether they were one of her own, one of her 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren or neighborhood youngsters. Her photo albums are filled with her smiling face and that of a child in her arms. She was always at her happiest when doing something for others.

Della loved music. Her grandchildren remember many songs they learned from their grandma. She seldom missed a music concert that a grandchild was in.

The church was an important part of Della's life. She was a member of the Mount Ayr First Christian Church. She was a regular at Sunday school and church as long as her health permitted. She was an active member of Dorcas for many years.

Della was preceded in death by her parents; husband Evan; brothers, Ernest, Earl, Carl and Nate; sisters, Luella, Leota, Grace and Eva; sons, Clarence, Richard and David; daughter Mae; and sgreat-grandson Steven.

She is survived by daughter Pattie FOLTZ; sister-in-law Dorothy JENNINGS; daughters-in-law, Doris CULVER and Irene CULBER; grandchildren, John CULVER, Su CHEN, Debbie CONNELL, Ken SHELDON, Cathy FOLTZ, Sherry ADAMS, Pam POORE, Mike CULVER, Pati FRIED, Mark CULVER, Vicki RASKOW and Ann SEMRAD; 22 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a host of friends.

Della was lifted into God's arms on February 20, 2003 at the age of 95. She had been residing at the Clearview Nursing Home in Mount Ayr where she received compassion and loving care from a wonderful staff. He family will always appreciate the special care she received.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 24, 2003 at Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr with Reverends John and Ainslee BRILLO officiating. Musicians were Shelly ADAMS and John BRILLO. Casketbearers were Caine POORE, Braydee POORE, Dustin ADAMS, Mark CULVER, Todd JENNINGS and Clint POORE.
