OBITUARY ~ WILLIAM "LAWRENCE" COMBS
William Lawrence COMBS was born January 19, 1914 at Randolph, Iowa to Quincy COMBS and Winnie JACOBSEN COMBS.
Lawrence graduated from Kellerton high school in 1931. After graduation Lawrence went to work for Charlie HYDE. He
stocked in four different Hyde stores, better known as Hy-Vee. He started in Kellerton and transferred to the store in
Beaconsfield and in 1932, Lawrence then worked in Grand River and Pleasanton, Iowa.
Lawrence was united in marriage to
Marjorie Grace EMIG on April 2, 1936 in Leon, Iowa. To this union two daughters were born: Charlotte Sue and Peggy
Jean. Lawrence and Grace were both baptized at the Kellerton Christian Church on April 9, 1944.
Lawrence and Grace
farmed south of Kellerton until moving to Mount Ayr in 1971. He worked as a maintenance man at the Ringgold County
Hospital. After retiring from the hospital, he worked for a short time at Lynn's Texaco. He took great pride in his
and never tired of telling stories of the past. He enjoyed taking care of the yard and flowers. He loved life, his wife,
children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was always fond of John Deere tractors.
Lawrence passed away
on June 2, 2004 at the Mount Ayr Health Care Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, Charley and
Lizzie EMIG; brother Donald COMBS; cousins raised in the COMBS home, Lester JACOBSEN and Dorothy BEEDE; three
brothers-in-law, Harold, Gerald and Wayne EMIG; and two sisters-in-law, Darlene EMIG and Winnie LAIRD.
survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Grace of Mount Ayr; daughters, Charlotte SWANK and husband Leonard and
Peggy WORTHINGTON and husband Steve, all of Mount Ayr; six grandchildren, Tami CASE and husband Darrel, Terri RUBY and
husband Ron, Travis SWANK and wife Niccole, Jason and Jacque WORTHINGTON, all of Mount Ayr, and Jennifer WORTHINGTON
of Grimes, Iowa; five great-grandchildren, Joshua CASE, Jesse and Jentri RUBY, Brayden and Dawson SWANK; three sisters-in-law,
Mardell EMIG, Helen EMIG and Violet COMBS; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at
10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 5, 2004 at Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr with Reverend Charles
HAWKINS officiating. Musicians were Justin AKERS, Mary DAVENPORT and Margaret BICKERS. Casket bearers were Larry CAMPBELL,
Marvin LESAN, Richard HEMBRY, Charley EMIG, Dick EMIG, Dan EMIG and Gary EMIG. Honorary pallbearers were Darrel, Tami and Josh
CASE, Ron, Terri, Jesse and Jentri RUBY, Travis, Niccole, Brayden and Dawson SWANK, Jennifer WORTHINGTON, Jacque WORTHINGTON,
Jason WORTHINGTON and Rachel EGGERT.
Lawrence was laid to rest in the Maple Row Cemetery, Kellerton.
