OBITUARY ~ VERA GENEVA (OLNEY) COMBS

Vera Geneva OLNEY was born August 8, 1909 to Carl Eugene & Maude Nora (ARMSTRONG) OLNEY, on a farm south of Mount Ayr,
Iowa. She was welcomed by brothers Cleo Clifton, George Robert, and sister Avis Bertha. Along with her family, Vera later
welcomed sister Mary Katherine, brother Carl Eugene, and sister Opal Maude.
Vera lived in Ringgold County all of her life with the exception of four years when the family moved to Kansas. Vera
attended Clipper Country School and then graduated from Redding High School in 1927. She helped take care of her
grandmother, Rachel OLNEY, for awhile then started cooking for the Miller Café and worked at the grocery store in
Redding. She also cooked at restaurants in Grant City, MO; Allendale, MO; and the Garland Hotel in Bedford, IA.
On January 12, 1940, Vera married Harley L. COMBS in Troy, Kansas. She welcomed Katie, Sue, and Vance into their home.
Later, Carl Edman, Lillie Ann, Helen Marie, and Vera Jean made the family complete. They made their home in Redding.
Vera was a very good cook. Her light rolls, noodles, chocolate pudding, and pies were among the favorites.
Vera was a member of the Redding Methodist Church for over 70 years. She attended until her health began to fail.
Vera became a clerk at the Redding Post Office in March 1951 and became Postmaster in August 1959. She retired on
November 5, 1976. In her retirement, she enjoyed spending time with family; making quilts; and doing jig-saw puzzles until her eye sight began to fail in 1991.
Vera passed away May 18, 2012 at the Mount Ayr Health Care Center.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband
Harley in August 1992; daughters Katie WILLIAMS in May 2001 and Jean BOECKMAN in January 2008; son-in-law Hollis RINEHART;
brothers Clifton, Robert, and Carl E., Jr; sisters Avis, Mary, and Opal.
Vera is survived by her children Ed COMBS & wife June of Des Moines, Lillie RINEHART of Mount Ayr, Helen COMBS of
Redding, and Vance COMBS & wife June of Cape Girardeau, MO; 13 grandchildren Bonnie MAJORS, Stephen COMBS, Jimmy WILLIAMS,
Mary Jo GRINNELL, Jo Anne BRANON, Virginia COMBS, Carl Eugene COMBS, Jeffery RINEHART, Lori WIMER, Amy WEBBER, Cheryl
MISEL, Amanda ROTHANZL, and Barbara RAY; 22 great-grandchildren Joshua, Summer, Carson, Tyler, Amanda, Shawn, Heather,
Devin, Jacob, Jeremy, Justina, Brooke, Sydney, Zackery, Ryan, Becca, Dylan, Trevor, Joseph, Katie, Ali, and Becky; 9
great-great-grandchildren Claire, Vaughn, Gwenth, Mercy, Judah, Destiny, Ryland, Justin, and August; sons-in-law James
WILLIAMS of Harlingen, TX and Gabe BOECKMAN of Lincoln, NE; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Her memorial fund is to the Redding United Methodist Church.
Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home of Mount Ayr was in
charge of arrangements.
Services were conducted at the United Methodist Church in Redding on Wednesday, May 23, 2012, with Rev. Skip RUSHING
officiating. Organist was Jodi LAWRENCE.
Casket bearers included Carl
COMBS, Kevin WIMER, Jeff RINEHART, Zach RINEHART, Mike COMBS and Gary LAMBERT.
Honorary pallbearers were Dale OLNEY,
Carroll OLNEY, LeRoy OLNEY, Joe OLNEY, Hal MAJORS, Steve COMBS, Jim WILLIAMS and Kenneth LAMBERT.
Burial was in the
Redding Cemetery in Redding.
