OBITUARY ~ WALTER "PAUL" CLARK

Walter Paul CLARK, son of James Pease and Carrie Ellen (MAPPS) CLARK, was born July 5, 1909 and departed this life at the Mount Ayr Health Care Center in Mount Ayr, Iowa, on April 29, 2003 at the age of 93 years, nine months and 24 days.

Paul was born in Mills county near Malvern, Iowa. He went to country schools in Mills county through eighth grade. He then attended four years of high school in Malvern graduating in 1926. His family moved to South Dakota for three years, then moved back to Mills county where they farmed until 1940 when they moved to Ringgold county to farm.

Paul was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Malvern before moving to Ringgold county, then in 1980 to the United Methodist Church in Mount Ayr.

On March 11, 1942 he was inducted in the United States Army. He had two months of basic training at Fort Des Moines, then was sent to Fort Lewis in Washington for medical basic training at the 27th General Hospital. He was then transferred to the 203rd General Hospital for orthopedic surgery training before being sent overseas. He served in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines. He had ribbons for Good Conduct, Asiatic Pacific Theater, Philippines Liberation, Bronze Star, Unit Citation and Island of Leyte Battles. He was a Technician Third Grade when discharged on December 5, 1945 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

On March 7, 1947 he married Lena ROBERTS and they lived near the Blackmore Corner for many years where James Paul, Linda Kay and Larry Eugene were born. In November 1971 they sold the farm and moved into Mount Ayr, where both worked at the Clearview Nursing Home.

Those left to mourn Paul's passing are his wife Lena; children, Jim and wife Margi CLARK of Ankeny, Iowa, Linda BUCKNER of Ankeny and Larry and wife Peggy CLARK of Fayetteville, North Carolina; grandchildren, Melissa and husband Jay HUDECEK, Rebecca and husband Rick CLARKE, Bobbi, Brandon and Brenda BUCKNER and Larry Eugene CLARK II; great-grandchildren, Alyson and Jayson HUDECEK, Clark and Kaitlynn BOERSMA and Colton and Chanler CLARKE; a brother Clair CLARK of Glenwood, Iowa; sister-in-law Zelma WOOLLUMS of Mount Ayr; several nieces, nephews and many friends.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Carrie CLARK; brother Harold CLARK; an infant brother at birth; son-in-law Ronald BUCKNER; sisters-in-law, Beulah CLARK, Dorothy ROBERTS and Ella BEEDE; brothers-in-law, Lee ROBERTS, Clair WOOLLUMS and Mark BEEDE.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 2, 2003 at Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr with Reverend Susan THOMAS officiating. Musicians were Debbie CANNON, Margaret BICKERS and Mary DAVENPORT. Casket bearers were Jay HUDECEK, RIck CLARKE, Adam BENTZ, Brandon BUCKNER, David AISTROPE and Marvin WOOLLUMS. Honorary pallbearer was Clark BOERSMA.

Paul was laid to rest in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Mount Ayr. Military graveside rites were conducted by Ringgold Post #172 American Legion.
