OBITUARY ~ HELEN MAE (VanDYKE) STARK CAMDEN

Helen Mae CAMDEN, aged 87, of Grand River, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas Edwin and Rachel (MAGILL) VanDYKE, was born February 28, 1921 in Audubon county, Iowa. She died at the Mount Ayr Health Care Center in Mount Ayr, Iowa on Saturday, October 18, 2008.

The family lived in Pella and West Bend, Iowa where her father owned theaters. When Helen was nine-years-old, she and her family bought a farm northwest of Leon, Iowa. She graduated from Leon high school.

In 1942 she married Dale Eugene STARK. They were blessed with two children, Rodney and Joyce. Dale died on January 29, 1962. In 1968 Helen married Bernard CAMDEN. He had an adult son, Barry. Bernard died on July 30, 1994.

Over the years Helen worked in a Leon store, a Des Moines War Plant during World War II, in Grand River at the grocery store and the telephone office, both for several years, and at the post office for 30 years, and she did the book work for the WRD Landfill for 18 years. She was also treasurer of the Grand River United Methodist Church for 30 years. She was an active member of the Grand River Legion Auxiliary and the United Methodist Women. In her free time, she enjoyed roller skating, gardening and sewing for her children.

Helen was very proud of her three grandchildren and their families. Donald and Misty STARK and Madalyn and Bailea of Mount Ayr, Iowa; Deanna and Mike SOBOTKA and Rachel and Eva of Tingley, Iowa, and Darrell and Kelly STARK and Kolton and Darian of Lorimor, Iowa. She enjoyed baking their favorite bran muffins for them.

In 2004 she moved into the Maple Ridge Assisted Living facility and then to the Mount Ayr Health Care Center.

Preceding her in death were her parents; two husbands; daughter, Joyce DAHLIN and brother, Glen VanDYKE.

Surviviors include her son, Rodney and Patty STARK of Mount Ayr, Iowa; son-in-law, Michael DAHLIN of Minneapolis, Minnesota; three grandchildren and their spouses; six great-grandchildren; step-son, Barry CAMDEN of New Jersey; brother, Raymond and Carmi VanDYKE of Osceola, Iowa; sister-in-law, Wynette VanDYKE of Osceola, Iowa; nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at the Grand River United Methodist Church in Grand River, Iowa on Tuesday, October 21, 2008, with Pastor Rick HAWKINS officiating. Burial was in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Osceola, Iowa. Arrangements were through the Slade-O'Donnell Funeral home of Leon and Lamoni, Iowa.

A memorial fund has been established by the family.
